A major enterprise push and new agent capabilities are accelerating Copilot adoption. Customers report weekly engagement matching Outlook, hinting at deep workplace integration.

Although there had been rumors that no one uses Copilot, Microsoft on Wednesday announced growth in its user base and activity around the AI tool integrated into M365 apps, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, said that there are now 20 million paid Copilot seats for enterprises.

As part of the financial update, Nadella also noted that the number of companies paying for more than 50,000 Copilot seats has quadrupled; Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Mercedes, and Roche have more than 90,000 seats each. He also drew attention to a deal struck earlier this week with Accenture for more than 740,000 seats.

He also stressed that people are really using Copilot: per-user requests have risen by almost 20% compared with the previous quarter, and weekly engagement is now on par with Outlook – it’s like a daily habit of intensive use.

Nadella also emphasized that Copilot does not depend on a single model: now in-chat by default there are several models with smart routing in agents with critique and guidance, and you can combine several models to form optimal responses.

The agent mode has become one of the directions fueling usage: as of last week it has become the standard experience in Copilot and Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Last week, Microsoft made Copilot’s agent capabilities publicly available. This allows Copilot to perform multi-step actions directly in documents. “Now you have a new way to delegate and complete work using Copilot,” said Nadella.
