TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – The president of the University of Alabama wants the Capstone to be at the forefront of artificial intelligence.
University of Alabama President Dr. Peter Mohler plans to ask the Board of Trustees to approve a new School of Data Science at the university.(WBRC)
Dr. Peter Mohler announced plans to ask the UA system trustees to approve a new school at the university specifically focused on AI.
Artificial intelligence isn’t something just for students studying engineering anymore. It’s being used by students in nursing, business and other fields.
It’s for that reason that Mohler said he wants to establish a School of Data Science.
He made the announcement during a news conference at UA’s High Performance Center and Data Center.
The building, while still under construction, will also serve as the academic home for the School of Data and Science.

He wants it up and running in 2027.
It would be a hub that partners with all 13 colleges and schools at the University of Alabama, touching thousands of University of Alabama students.
“Employers are looking for students that have AI competency,” Mohler said. “We see workforce, not in the hundreds that are needed, but in the hundreds of thousands.”

A School of Data Science still needs approval from the UA system Board of Trustees.
Mohler said more details will be released to the Board during its meeting in June.
