Apple Inc. forum highlights real-world uses of AI in manufacturing

  • May 1, 2026

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A forum at Michigan State University is giving students and business leaders a closer look at how artificial intelligence is being used in manufacturing.

The Apple Manufacturing Academy Spring Forum, hosted with Apple Inc. focused on practical applications of AI across industries, including automotive production and supply chain management.

“We teach them smart manufacturing techniques,” said Vice President of Operations Priya Balasubramaniam. She added that the company defines these systems as “connected, lean, agile, scalable, and sustainable.”

Organizers say the training extends beyond manufacturing and can apply to a variety of careers. Director of the Apple Manufacturing Academy Sarah Gretter says there are many “transferable skills and techniques” that they teach for many jobs.

The forum also showcased how AI is used in less expected settings, including agriculture.

“We don’t think about it when we open our carton of milk in the morning, but there’s a lot of systems behind them, and AI plays a huge role in making sure that the cow, all the way to the fridge, has an actual process that is safe and delivered for the best customer experience possible,” said Gretter.

Day two of the Forum on May 1 will give attendees the opportunity to step on the work grounds of places that have already implemented AI in day-to-day operations. These locations include MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams and the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Facility.

Many attendees came with the purpose of learning more about AI’s positive use for their own workforce, amid recent trends with Michigan AI data center proposals failing.

“I definitely agree with some of the concerns, especially when it comes to the mass scale,” said Jack Kosloski of Blue Lake Packaging. “But I do see some benefits in manufacturing.”

Michigan is home to the only in-person Apple Manufacturing Academy in the U.S., with virtual class options available. More information on the academy and it’s partnership with Michigan State University can be found on their website.
