The Pentagon has signed agreements with seven technology groups to deploy artificial intelligence tools across its classified networks to improve data analysis and support faster decision-making in military operations.
The US War Department said companies, including Google (Alphabet Inc), OpenAI, Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) AWS will provide systems for secure use in sensitive environments.
The plan covers ‘Impact Level 6’ and ‘Impact Level 7’ networks, which handle highly classified data.
The Pentagon said: “Integrating secure frontier AI capabilities […] will streamline data synthesis, elevate situational understanding, and augment warfighter decision-making in complex operational environments.”
The agreements form part of a wider strategy to position the US military as an AI-first force, with applications spanning combat, intelligence and internal operations.
Its GenAI.mil platform has already been adopted by more than 1.3 million personnel, generating tens of millions of prompts in five months.
Officials said the system has reduced task times from months to days.
The department added that it will avoid reliance on a single supplier, instead building a flexible system using multiple providers.
It said maintaining domestic leadership in AI development remains critical to national security and future defence capabilities.
