OpenAI announced a set of new account security features this week, including the option to use USB security keys to lock your ChatGPT account down. That’s alongside what OpenAI is calling Advanced Account Security, which is an opt-in setting that strengthens everything from sign-in protections to account recovery.
In a blog post announcing the changes, OpenAI says Advanced Account Security “brings together a set of heightened security measures that help safeguard against account takeover while making those protections easier to activate in one place.” Turning it on protects logins by requiring passkeys or physical security keys and completely disables password-based logins. It also disables email and SMS account recovery, requiring backup passkeys, security keys and recovery keys if you get locked out of your account.
Turning on Advanced Account Security also makes sign-in sessions shorter to reduce how long your account is exposed if a session is hijacked. You’ll also receive alerts whenever someone signs into your account, and you can review and manage active sessions in your account settings. Finally, you’ll automatically be opted out of letting your conversations be used for model training.
As part of the launch of Advanced Account Security, OpenAi says it has partnered with Yubico, who makes YubiKey devices, which are physical USB security keys you can use with ChatGPT. It’s offering ChatGPT users “preferred pricing” on a bundle that includes the YubiKey C Nano and YubiKey C NFC.
