Wix.com Stock Down 17% in April: Anthropic Claude Design Launch and Analyst Downgrades - News and Statistics

The S&P 500 index posted gains of nearly 10% in April, but not every stock participated in the rally. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Wix.com (NASDAQ: WIX), a company that provides do-it-yourself web design tools, saw its share price fall by more than 17% during the month.

Anthropic’s new product rattles the market

Much of Wix’s decline was tied to a product launch from the artificial intelligence model developer Anthropic. After weeks of speculation, Anthropic formally introduced Claude Design, an AI-powered tool that lets users create designs, prototypes, slides, and other visual work. This offering overlaps with many of the services Wix provides to its customers.

Earlier in the year, legacy software and technology stocks faced pressure amid worries that AI models could disrupt their businesses. While some of those stocks have since recovered, partly due to their own AI efforts, many investors remain cautious. The market’s reaction to Claude Design suggests that a significant number of investors view it as a direct competitor to Wix.

Costly share buyback

At the beginning of April, Wix executed a financial move that investors did not view favorably. The company repurchased a large portion of its common shares through a modified Dutch auction. Although this unusual method saved Wix some capital, the expense was still substantial. According to the company’s preliminary auction results, it spent more than $1.6 billion to buy back just over 17.5 million shares, representing nearly 30% of the total outstanding shares.

For a business that has never recorded annual revenue above $2 billion and held less than $1.2 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of 2025, this outlay was considerable.

Analyst sentiment sours

Throughout April, analysts tracking Wix became notably more pessimistic about its prospects. Several reduced their price targets on the stock, and two went further by downgrading their recommendations. UBS analyst Chris Zhang and Citizens analyst Andrew Boone each lowered their ratings by one level, moving from the equivalent of a buy to a neutral stance.

Wix supplies tools that allow non-designers to quickly build or modify websites and other digital assets. This business model remains vulnerable to competitors that can perform the work faster, more effectively, or at a lower cost.
