Investors seeking to determine which major cloud platform is leading the artificial intelligence expansion received a definitive signal from the latest quarterly earnings reports, according to a Yahoo Finance article published on May 4, 2026.

Alphabet‘s Google Cloud revenue reached $20.0 billion in its most recent quarter, representing a 63% year-over-year increase. This growth rate surpassed the 40% reported by Microsoft for Azure during the same period and was more than double the 28% growth posted by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This marked the third consecutive quarter of accelerating growth for Google Cloud. The segment’s cloud backlog nearly doubled over a span of just three months, indicating that its lead over competitors may continue to expand.

In absolute size, Google Cloud’s $20 billion remains smaller than AWS’s $37.6 billion and Microsoft’s broader intelligent cloud segment. However, growth rates during a major infrastructure shift offer insight into which company is best positioned for the new era.

Google Cloud’s 63% growth built on a trend of acceleration: 32% in the second quarter of 2025, 34% in the third quarter, and 48% in the fourth quarter. Microsoft’s Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 40% in the quarter ended March 31, staying within a 39%–40% range for three consecutive quarters. AWS accelerated to 28%, its fastest growth in roughly four years, but still well behind Google Cloud’s pace.

Profitability at Google Cloud also improved sharply. Operating income climbed to $6.6 billion, up from $2.2 billion a year earlier. The segment’s operating margin expanded to 32.9%, compared with 17.8% in the prior-year period.

During Alphabet’s first-quarter earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai noted that revenue from products built on Alphabet’s generative AI models grew nearly 800% year over year, suggesting that AI spending is yielding substantial returns for Google Cloud customers.

Perhaps the most notable figure from the quarter was not revenue but the backlog, which points to future growth.
