Xbox ends Copilot on console and the reasoning reveals how Asha Sharma wants to reshape the platform

Xbox’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, is on a roll lately. After committing to improving Xbox already and, as of today, restructuring leadership, she has now taken to X (formerly Twitter) with another message for fans, stating:

“Xbox needs to move faster, deepen our connection with the community, and address friction for both players and developers. Today, we promoted leaders who helped build Xbox, while also bringing in new voices to help push us forward. This balance is important as we get the business back on track. As part of this shift, you’ll see us begin to retire features that don’t align with where we’re headed. We will begin winding down Copilot on mobile and will stop development of Copilot on console.”

For those unaware, Copilot is Microsoft’s AI companion, similar to tools like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. However, unlike those, Copilot has struggled to gain traction despite heavy investment.

With this change, plans for Copilot within the Xbox app are winding down, and plans to bring Copilot to console are over. Xbox Copilot would have allowed users to ask for help while playing games, but Sharma’s post suggests Microsoft is stepping away from pushing AI into Xbox for now.

For me, this signals a smart move. Sharma has just appointed new roles at Xbox, bringing in people from CoreAI, which was always going to draw some scrutiny over fears of AI overreach, so announcing the end of Copilot on console is one way to shut that down.
