Trump Administration Announces New AI Research and Security Agreements with Microsoft, Google DeepMind, and xAI - News and Statistics

The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that it had finalized new agreements with Microsoft, Google DeepMind, and Elon Musk’s xAI to deepen collaboration with major technology firms on artificial intelligence research and security. This information was reported by Barrons Roundtable newsletter editor Josh Schafer during an appearance on Varney & Co.

The Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), a division of the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology, will partner with these AI companies on pre-deployment evaluations and targeted research into frontier AI capabilities and AI security. These accords expand upon earlier partnerships between CAISI and the companies, facilitating information-sharing, encouraging voluntary product enhancements, and ensuring that the government maintains a clear understanding of AI capabilities and the global AI competitive landscape.

Developers frequently supply CAISI with models that have had some safeguards reduced or removed in order to evaluate national security-related capabilities and risks. Evaluators from multiple government agencies may take part in these evaluations and regularly provide input through the TRAINS Taskforce, an interagency expert group focused on AI national security concerns. The agreements are designed to support testing in classified environments and are drafted with flexibility to keep pace with ongoing AI advancements.

Microsoft’s chief responsible AI officer, Natasha Crampton, stated in a release that the agreements will advance the science of AI testing and evaluation, including collaborative work to test Microsoft’s frontier models, assess safeguards, and help mitigate national security and large-scale public safety risks. She added that ongoing, rigorous testing is essential to building trust and confidence in advanced AI systems.

CAISI Director Chris Fall commented that independent, rigorous measurement science is critical to understanding frontier AI and its national security implications, and that these expanded industry collaborations help scale the center’s work in the public interest at a crucial time.
