Google has updated its Gemini AI assistant to allow users to generate downloadable files directly from a conversational prompt. The feature supports formats including Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, as well as PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CSV, LaTeX, Plain Text, Rich Text Format, and Markdown.
The update is available now to all Gemini app users globally. Users describe the file they need in the chat and Gemini generates it for download or export to Google Drive.
Maryam Sanglaji, Group Product Manager for the Gemini App, says the update means users can “quickly move from a brainstorm to a complete file without ever leaving the Gemini app.” Google’s examples include exporting a budget proposal to Excel, arranging loose ideas into a bulleted draft, and consolidating a lengthy collaboration into a single-page PDF or Word document.
Iris Valle, Google’s Head of State of Florida K-12 Education, wrote on LinkedIn that Gemini can now “create PDFs, Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides” from a single prompt.
A workflow shortcut for Workspace users
For teachers, the feature removes a step that has slowed adoption of AI tools in day-to-day work. A lesson plan, grading rubric, or parent letter can now go from prompt to formatted file without leaving the chat. Students working on research can generate citations in a Word document or export data to CSV for analysis.
For schools and institutions already running on Google Workspace, the ability to go from prompt to finished file inside a single interface closes a gap between what AI chatbots can generate and what educators actually need to hand over, submit, or share.
