Anthropic Focuses on Consumer Appeal for Claude Chatbot with Speed Improvements and New Partnerships - News and Statistics

Anthropic PBC is working to make its Claude chatbot more attractive to everyday users, according to a Bloomberg report. The artificial intelligence startup had originally focused its Claude chatbot on business customers.

Since late last year, employees have been tasked with improving how the chatbot handles personal questions, such as those about health, travel and recipes. Mike Krieger, co-leader of the company’s Labs team, which works on experimental AI software, discussed these efforts on the sidelines of a company conference in San Francisco.

Krieger noted that Anthropic is concentrating on the quality, polish and performance of its chatbot. That has included reducing the time it takes for a user to query Claude after opening the mobile app. He said the company reduced that time from about five or six seconds down to approximately one second.

Anthropic released the first version of the Claude chatbot in 2023. While the company has built AI software aimed at enterprise users, it has made progress with consumers in recent months, helped by the viral success of two products that assist people in streamlining tasks. The startup also reached a larger audience with a Super Bowl commercial that presented its Claude chatbot as an ad-free alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

A standoff with the Pentagon earlier this year over AI safeguards has also helped, pushing Claude up the app store charts. The software is currently the second-most-popular free app in Apple‘s App Store in the US, ranked between OpenAI’s ChatGPT at number one and Google‘s Gemini app in third place.

In March, the company reported that daily signups had quadrupled since the start of the year. At that time, more than one million people were signing up each day.

As part of an effort to meet growing demand for its software, Anthropic also said Wednesday that it had signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX for computing power. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
