In discussions about the largest artificial intelligence hyperscalers, the focus typically falls on Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Amazon. These four companies are responsible for hundreds of billions of dollars in capital expenditures, predominantly directed toward data centers to expand their AI computing infrastructure. However, not all of them possess equal resources to dedicate to this competition, and some do not use the computing power solely for their own purposes.

All four companies have recently released their earnings reports, prompting an evaluation of which stands out as the best investment opportunity.

Meta leads in revenue growth

Among the group, Meta Platforms achieved the fastest revenue growth, a distinction it has maintained for an extended period. This acceleration stems from integrating AI technologies into its established advertising business. Alphabet ranked second, also leveraging AI to enhance its ad operations. Google’s growth was primarily driven by its cloud computing segment, Google Cloud, which saw a 63% spike in quarterly revenue, fueled by strong demand for cloud services and Tensor Processing Unit sales. Microsoft and Amazon trail closely behind Alphabet, relying significantly on their cloud computing divisions to boost their overall growth rates.

Operating income comparisons

When examining operating income growth, a different picture emerges. Amazon’s substantial commerce sales fall into a low-margin, low-growth category. From this perspective, three companies are effectively tied for first place, while Microsoft ranks fourth by a considerable margin. Despite Microsoft’s 17% revenue growth and 20% operating profit growth, which remain impressive, the other three are performing notably better.

Valuation through cash flows

Given the heavy capital spending each company is undertaking, traditional earnings-based valuations can be misleading. A more reliable approach is to use cash flows for valuation. All four companies are deploying most of their available cash flows to build out data centers. During periods of intense capital investment, cash flow from operations serves as a smarter metric, as it excludes capital expenditures and focuses purely on the cash a business generates.
