Productivity software company Notion is making a decisive move beyond note-taking, turning its workspace into a central hub for AI agents and automated workflows. In a recent product announcement, the company unveiled a new developer platform that allows teams to build, connect, and manage AI agents capable of working across tools, databases, and custom systems.
At the core of this update is the idea of orchestration, a setup where different AI agents, data sources, and tools can work together in a coordinated way. Instead of using AI only to assist with writing or summarising notes, Notion is positioning its workspace as a place where humans and AI agents collaborate to get work done, step by step, across multiple systems.
Earlier this year, Notion introduced custom AI agents that could handle routine tasks such as answering common questions, generating status updates, or running simple workflows. According to the company, users have already created more than one million such agents. However, these agents were largely limited to information stored within Notion and could not easily interact with external tools or follow complex, custom logic.
The new developer platform addresses those gaps. Teams can now run their own custom code inside Notion using a built-in cloud environment called Workers. In simple terms, this allows businesses to define exactly how tasks should run, such as syncing data, triggering actions, or building internal tools, without needing separate servers or third-party automation services. Notion says even this coding work can be handled by AI coding assistants, lowering the technical barrier further.
Another key update lets teams bring live data from outside systems directly into the workspace. This means information stays updated automatically and can be used by both workflows and AI agents. The goal is to make the workspace a single place where data, tasks, and decisions come together, instead of being spread across different tools.

Notion is also opening the door to external AI agents. Users can now connect agents they already use outside the platform, assign them tasks, and track their progress as if they were native to the workspace. The company has also introduced an interface for organisations that want to connect their own internal AI systems directly to Notion.
Speaking during the launch, Ivan Zhao acknowledged that the company had not traditionally focused on developers, but said that approach is changing as Notion evolves into a more programmable platform. The broader goal, he said, is to allow any data, any tool, and any agent to work together inside a single environment. With this shift, Notion is moving closer to the role of core infrastructure for knowledge work rather than just a productivity app. As businesses increasingly look to automate processes and deploy AI across everyday operations, platforms that can connect agents, custom logic, and live data in one place are becoming central to how work gets done.
