Google’s newly announced Gemini Intelligence platform may not arrive on several older premium Android smartphones, despite their flagship branding. The company has outlined strict hardware and software requirements that limit support mainly to newer-generation devices with advanced AI processing capabilities.
According to Google, Gemini Intelligence depends heavily on Gemini Nano v3, its latest on-device AI model. Devices must support Android’s AICore service alongside Gemini Nano v3 or later. In addition, smartphones need at least 12GB RAM, flagship-class processors, advanced media processing features, and long-term software support commitments.
This means that many premium phones launched over the last two years — including some earlier Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S-series models — may not qualify for the full Gemini Intelligence experience.
Google’s eligibility criteria also include five Android OS upgrades with AVF and pKVM support, six years of quarterly security updates, Android 17 quality certification, and strict device reliability benchmarks scheduled for 2026. These requirements go beyond standard hardware specifications and focus on long-term AI readiness.
The biggest limitation appears to be support for Gemini Nano v3. Most smartphones released in early 2025 reportedly use Gemini Nano v2, which may not meet the new AI framework’s demands.
Google Developers documentation currently lists several devices compatible with the Gemini Nano v3 Prompt API. These include the Pixel 10 series, Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup, OPPO Find X9 series, Vivo X300 devices, OnePlus 15 series, iQOO 15, Realme GT 7T, and Honour Magic 8 Pro, among others.
However, Google clarified that Prompt API compatibility does not automatically guarantee access to the complete Gemini Intelligence feature set. Devices must still satisfy memory, chipset, software, and security standards.
The company has not officially confirmed which processors qualify as “flagship-grade,” but expectations include Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-series chips, MediaTek Dimensity 9000-series platforms, and Apple’s Pro and Max A-series processors.
Gemini Nano v3 is designed as a multimodal AI model capable of running directly on supported Android devices without depending entirely on cloud computing. Google says the model enables features such as summarisation, rewriting, proofreading, image descriptions, and prompt-driven AI experiences while improving privacy and reducing latency through on-device processing.
Gemini Intelligence itself represents Google’s broader vision of a deeply integrated Android AI ecosystem. The framework allows Gemini to understand on-screen content, work across multiple apps simultaneously, and automate tasks with minimal user input.
Google says the system will power features such as AI-assisted Autofill, contextual support inside Chrome, improved voice typing, multi-step app actions, and AI-generated widgets created through natural language prompts.
The company also showcased “Rambler,” a voice typing system capable of refining spoken sentences in real time, removing filler words, and handling multilingual conversations, including seamless switching between English and Hindi.
Another major focus is cross-device continuity. Google plans to extend Gemini Intelligence across Android phones, smartwatches, laptops, cars, and XR devices while maintaining shared task awareness and privacy controls.
Despite the ambitious rollout, uncertainty remains over whether older flagship smartphones with Gemini Nano v2 could gain partial compatibility through future Android or system-level updates.
