HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – The governor is expected to sign a new state law Tuesday morning that will change how children use social media and AI chatbots.
The bill, which has received bipartisan support, is scheduled to be signed at 10 a.m.
Chatbot requirements
The legislation requires chatbots to tell users they are talking to AI and not a real person.
If a chatbot notices any signs of suicide or self-harm, it should refer the user to mental health resources, including 988.
Social media protections
The bill adds restrictions on platforms that use personalized feeds for minors and would show warning signs to block children from seeing sensitive content.
It also allows parents to set time restrictions for when and how long children can use certain platforms.
Workplace protections
The law also includes protections for workers.
When applying for a job, workplaces would have to let applicants know if AI is being used to sort through applications.
Employers would not be allowed to use the software in a discriminatory way to look for certain races or genders.
The bill would require managers to give notice before any mass layoffs and tell workers whether the layoffs are connected to AI or other technological changes.
