Anthropic Co-Founder Jack Clark Calls for AI Slowdown as Claude Handles 80% of Coding Work - News and Statistics

Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark has called for the AI industry to slow its pace before the technology begins developing itself further without human involvement. According to a BBC report, Clark stated that 80% of Anthropic’s coding work is already performed by its AI system, Claude, and that figure could reach 100% within a few years. He described the decision to allow that progression as a choice that companies can make or stop.

Clark commented that the AI industry currently has an accelerator but lacks a braking mechanism, and that his company wants to help build that brake. The concept is referred to as recursive self-improvement, where an AI can enhance itself without human input, as detailed in an Anthropic blog post from the night of June 4, 2026. In such a recursive model, AI agents—autonomous workers created by a chatbot—could become capable enough to build and train models themselves, meaning Claude could be continuously improved by Claude.

While recursive AI could benefit fields like science and healthcare, Anthropic warned that it might increase the risks of humans losing control over AI systems. The blog post noted that if systems can fully build their own successors, the methods for securing, monitoring, and shaping their behavior become much more important. Evidence within Anthropic’s own model suggests recursion is approaching sooner rather than later, as code correction rates by staff have been falling steadily over the past year, indicating fewer errors in Claude’s output. Additionally, Claude can run its own research experiments when given open-ended questions, such as whether a weaker model can supervise a stronger one, and produce solutions without human input.

The blog stated that the evidence suggests the human role is narrowing at each step in the AI development process. Anthropic said its institute will conduct research to build a system that checks whether developers have actually stopped or slowed the move toward recursive AI. However, a real slowdown would require multiple well-resourced labs at or near the frontier, in multiple countries, agreeing to stop under the same conditions.
