McDonald’s is currently testing an artificial intelligence order-taking system at the drive-thru, according to Restaurant Business Magazine. The system, called ArchIQ, is being trialed at five locations across the country. This test is part of the company’s new brand strategy, McDonald’s Next, which was announced this week.

During the announcement of McDonald’s Next earlier this week, CEO Chris Kempczinski stated that customers should not have to choose between hospitality and speed. An X account for a McDonald’s franchise, McFranchisee, indicated this week that Google is involved in the new project. McFranchisee wrote on X that the company has been working in the AI field for about eight years, sold its in-house model to IBM because it was not good enough for its needs, and wanted to hire Google three years ago. The account added that the system is currently in five test stores, has processed over one million transactions, and about 90% of orders are completed without human escalations.

McFranchisee also stated that every McDonald’s in the country will receive Google Edge Cloud blades installed ahead of the rollout. The account described ArchIQ as not only assisting with drive-thru orders but also acting as a master brain to help managers run a better restaurant, alerting them to potential bottlenecks or issues. Most comments under the X post were negative, with one person expressing dislike for similar systems at Wendy’s and kiosks at McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Taco Bell.
