A new report from Reuters details the fierce competition between Anthropic and OpenAI, a rivalry that has accelerated the generative AI boom. According to the source, in late 2022, OpenAI learned that Anthropic was developing an AI-powered chatbot. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman then instructed his team to speed up work on a competing product. Two weeks later, the company launched ChatGPT, triggering a technological shift that is expected to reshape the global economy and human interaction.

This same sense of urgency now extends to the companies’ plans for major initial public offerings. Both firms are racing to be the first to market, believing that an early listing will help set investor expectations for their valuations and establish their respective CEOs as the leading voices in the AI sector.

As recently as May, many advisers anticipated that OpenAI would be the first to take steps toward going public. OpenAI has informed some investors that it was aiming for an IPO as early as September. However, Anthropic moved first, announcing on June 1 that it had made a confidential filing with U.S. regulators. OpenAI followed a week later, on Monday.

The stakes go beyond the personal clash between Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, a former OpenAI researcher who was responsible for some of the core technology behind ChatGPT. The competition is now spilling onto Wall Street. It is unusual for two such large direct rivals to raise capital simultaneously, and the IPOs are so substantial that both companies are necessarily turning to some of the same banks for assistance. OpenAI is seeking a valuation of around $1 trillion.

Bankers and advisers are navigating increasingly complex relationships with both companies. Executives at each firm have pressed their IPO advisers for insights into the rival’s plans, prompting some banks working with both to erect internal barriers between deal teams to prevent information leaks.

The report describes the situation as an all-out war.
