SpaceX Leases Colossus 1 Data Center to Anthropic Following Grok AI Latency Issues - News and Statistics

SpaceX has opted to lease the entire computing capacity of its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis to Anthropic PBC after facing technical hurdles in using that site to develop and operate its Grok artificial intelligence systems, according to individuals with knowledge of the situation.

The enterprise, which took over Musk’s xAI earlier this year, initially intended to train its most advanced AI models by leveraging a network of three data center campuses. However, the firm ran into latency problems when linking Colossus 1 with two other facilities situated more than 10 miles apart, worsened by outdated network gear, the sources said. Developing larger and more sophisticated AI models demands extremely fast connections; if the links between sites are older or have lower bandwidth, it can cause delays that hinder the entire cluster.

Instead of persisting with these constraints, SpaceX concluded that the facility would generate more value by serving external clients and creating a fresh income stream, the people noted, requesting anonymity because the details are not publicly available. The revised approach for Colossus 1 also underscores the challenges in Musk’s ambitious and expensive push to quickly construct a vast array of data centers filled with cutting-edge chips to support AI. The company had frequently highlighted that its first Colossus site was erected in only 122 days, surpassing its own projections and industry norms.

Beyond latency issues, integrating Colossus 1 with the other sites was made more difficult by differences in hardware, the sources said. The facility includes a combination of Nvidia chip generations, such as Hopper and Blackwell systems, along with some older accelerators. In contrast, Colossus 2 and 3 were constructed more consistently around Nvidia’s Blackwell chips.

SpaceX has made its data center expansion a central element of its investor pitch during the roadshow for its record-breaking initial public offering. Anthropic and Alphabet Inc.‘s Google have each entered into computing agreements with SpaceX that could be worth tens of billions of dollars over multiple years, supporting the rocket manufacturer’s shift toward becoming an AI infrastructure provider. Representatives for SpaceX, officially named Space Exploration Technologies Corp., did not reply to a request for comment.
