Investing in cloud computing companies is a common method for gaining portfolio exposure to the artificial intelligence trend, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. Many businesses lack the resources to build their own AI-focused data centers and instead rent processing power from major cloud operators such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. These three firms dominate the industry, but they are not the only options available.

Newer Entrants in the Cloud Space

Two relatively recent players, CoreWeave and Nebius, also offer AI cloud capacity for businesses and are growing at a faster pace, partly because of their smaller scale. The question posed is which group of companies would represent a better investment opportunity at this time.

Performance of the Established Giants

AWS is the largest cloud infrastructure operation globally and generates the majority of Amazon‘s profits. In the first quarter, AWS contributed 59% of Amazon’s operating income, and its revenue grew at a rate of 28%, marking its fastest expansion in nearly four years. Microsoft does not disclose as much detail about Azure as its competitors do, only providing the business unit’s growth rate, which was 40% in its most recent quarter. Google Cloud, however, posted the highest growth rate among the three at 63%, aided by its Tensor Processing Units. These TPUs are powerful computing units that can outperform general-purpose GPUs from a cost perspective when handling the specific deep learning and matrix mathematics workloads they are designed for. Deploying TPUs helped Alphabet catch up in the AI build-out, and the company is now selling those proprietary AI chips directly to other companies rather than only renting out their processing power. With external sales of these units contributing to Google Cloud’s growth rate, it becomes more difficult to gauge the performance of the infrastructure business alone, but it remains the fastest-growing of the three despite being the smallest.

While Microsoft does not provide exact profitability figures, it is assumed that Azure generates substantial profits for the company. All three legacy players are earning significant income from their cloud computing divisions, demonstrating that cloud computing can be a viable standalone business. The article then questions whether CoreWeave and Nebius can reach that same level of profitability.
