OpenAI Robotics Expansion: Could It Challenge Tesla's Optimus? - News and Statistics

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is expanding its focus from software to physical hardware. This shift was indicated by chief executive Sam Altman in a recent post on X, where he stated the company is seeking engineers to help program and manufacture robots that are useful for society.

The move raises questions about the impact on Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), which in January suggested it could be selling autonomous humanoid robot assistants, called Optimus, by the end of next year. Without more details on Altman’s vision, it is unclear whether OpenAI will directly compete with Tesla, which appears focused on building humanoid robots for warehouse and household tasks. OpenAI may instead develop robots for industrial assembly lines, dangerous drilling work, or agricultural duties.

There is little doubt, however, that the two companies will eventually compete in the autonomous robot market. This poses a greater challenge for Tesla and its shareholders than for OpenAI and its future investors, should OpenAI ever go public. Tesla stock is currently trading at nearly 13 times next year’s projected revenue of $118 billion and 160 times 2027’s expected earnings per share of around $2.60. Both valuations are extremely high, suggesting the stock is priced not just for perfection but for dominance across multiple markets.

Next year’s results will still not fully reflect any robot revenue that may begin flowing for Tesla in 2027, if any at all. Similarly, it is unlikely OpenAI will have any physical robots to sell next year. Much can change between now and then, giving current and potential shareholders time and reason to consider that a well-established rival could compete with Tesla in robotics, possibly even in the humanoid assistant market. Additionally, ChatGPT still dominates the AI chatbot landscape with a near-80% market share, according to Statcounter, which could allow OpenAI to handle robot integration or management with relative ease using its popular app.
