New Delhi: L’Oréal and OpenAI have announced a collaboration that will bring beauty discovery, virtual try-on and AI-native advertising into ChatGPT, marking a major consumer-facing push for artificial intelligence in the beauty category.
The collaboration will focus on two areas: AI-powered consumer journeys towards agentic commerce, and AI-powered functions across research, science and marketing.
As part of the partnership, Maybelline New York will bring Makeup Virtual Try-On directly to ChatGPT. The feature will be powered by L’Oréal’s ModiFace technology and will allow consumers to discover and try makeup looks in real time through AI-powered conversation.
L’Oréal will also work with OpenAI to strengthen product discovery within ChatGPT in the United States for brands including Lancôme and Kérastase.
SkinCeuticals, CeraVe and Garnier are part of a global ChatGPT ad pilot, which the companies said will test AI-native advertising at the moment of consumer intent and commerce.
The announcement places ChatGPT as a potential new beauty discovery and shopping interface, moving product trial, search, discovery and advertising closer to conversational AI.
L’Oréal said the partnership is part of its Transformative AI roadmap, with OpenAI as a foundational partner.
“At L’Oréal, we believe we can be more demanding of AI to augment our beauty consumers, our métiers such as marketing and research and our employees,” said Asmita Dubey, Chief Digital and Marketing Officer at L’Oréal.
“Our collaboration with OpenAI structurally supports this ambition to bring new solutions within beauty vertical,” she said.
The collaboration also extends to research and science. L’Oréal is using GPT-Rosalind, OpenAI’s purpose-built life sciences reasoning model, to map the skin microbiome at scale.
The work will help identify beneficial bacteria and accelerate the development of natural and effective skincare, starting with La Roche-Posay.
OpenAI’s latest model will also power CreAItech, L’Oréal’s in-house generative AI beauty content platform. The platform can create imagery and video aligned with brand heritage, and is aimed at augmenting human creativity.
“L’Oréal has long combined science, creativity and technology to shape the future of beauty,” said Emmanuel Marill, MD for EMEA at OpenAI.
“We’re excited to be working with their teams to support that next chapter, from accelerating research and innovation to helping employees work in new ways and creating more useful, intuitive experiences for consumers,” he said.
The partnership comes as L’Oréal marks its 10th anniversary at VivaTech, Europe’s large technology and innovation event.
L’Oréal said its broader AI roadmap is built around three priorities: improving consumer experience with personalised AI-powered beauty tools, helping teams work smarter and more creatively at scale, and building AI capability across the organisation.
The company said 73,000 employees have already been trained in generative AI and equipped with internal tools such as L’OréalGPT and personal AI companions.
For L’Oréal, the collaboration gives its brands a direct presence inside conversational AI-led discovery and advertising environments. For OpenAI, the partnership extends ChatGPT’s role into beauty commerce, consumer engagement and enterprise AI use cases.
