TL;DR
Feature Rollout: Anthropic has added brand controls, direct editing, and exports to Claude Design, its AI visual design tool. Code Handoff: /design-sync may move design-system context between Claude Design and Anthropic’s coding agent, Claude Code. Usage Limits: A reviewer used most of a weekly allowance quickly, so heavy Claude Design iteration still needs predictable access. Market Context: Open Design, Figma Make, and Stitch AI keep pressure on design-to-code workflow control.
Anthropic released a Claude Design update on June 17, adding design-system controls and code integration, direct canvas editing, and export paths meant to move AI-generated designs closer to governed team workflows.
Claude Design is Anthropic’s AI visual design tool, while Claude Code is the coding agent used for implementation handoff. Enterprise-grade controls move the product beyond fast one-off mockups. Shared brand rules, approved components, code review, and usage limits now decide whether teams can rely on generated design work.
Brand Controls Move Claude Design Toward Team Workflows
Design systems are shared libraries of brand components and rules. Teams may use the Claude Design update to bring imported design systems into Claude Design from code repositories, design files, or raw uploads. Google’s Stitch AI redesign had already connected canvas work with developer tooling.
Product and marketing groups can put company rules into generation before off-brand drafts need manual repair. Claude Design now brings that handoff pressure into the design surface instead of leaving it to designers and developers after a mockup is finished.
Large organizations also get a new admin role that can approve one standard design system and lock down edits. One approved library can become the working source for generated assets instead of a checklist applied after a mockup is already built.
Approved-system checks may generate assets with imported components, compare the work against the design system, and make corrections before the user sees the result. Enterprise accounts still require administrator enablement, so access does not automatically switch on across every paid workspace.
Claude Design currently remains in beta for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.
With the update, brand compliance moves from a final review task toward an input that shapes the first generated draft. Anthropic’s control layer now connects direct canvas editing, Claude Code sync, and workplace tool connections instead of treating them as separate conveniences.
Claude Code Sync Targets the Handoff Gap
/design-sync allows to move design-system context between Claude Code and Claude Design, then send completed designs back toward the repository where engineers eventually work. Such repository-backed workflows can turn design output into an implementation asset that can be reviewed alongside code rather than recreated after a handoff.
The new handoff process between Claude Design and Claude Code aims to make prototype-to-production work seamless. Direct editing reduces the need to regenerate an entire design for small changes, because users can drag, resize, and align elements on the canvas. Export options include PDF and PowerPoint, and tool connections cover Adobe, Canva, Gamma, Miro, Replit, Vercel, and Wix for presentation, collaboration, or deployment paths.
Usage limits remain an adoption constraint even after the token changes. Shared limits cover Claude Design usage alongside chat, Claude Cowork, and Claude Code.
Direct editing may reduce wasted regeneration, but Anthropic’s heavy-use ceiling might limit adoption.
Open Design and Figma Frame the Competitive Market
Anthropic is making the change inside a wider design-to-code market. Open Design is a community-built local-first alternative that emphasizes self-hosting, customer API keys, model choice, coding-agent support, and a large library of skills and design systems.
Eight weeks after Claude Design launched in April, Open Design has already reached thousands of GitHub stars and hundreds of contributors. Its self-hosted model gives teams a different control path from Anthropic’s hosted governance layer.
Figma Make adds a different pressure point. Its AI app builder gave designers and non-coders an AI app-building path already in 2025. Anthropic’s release instead binds the design surface to brand governance, repository handoff, and workplace exports.
