Getty Images Holdings Inc. experienced a stock surge of up to 145% on Monday following the disclosure of a licensing arrangement with OpenAI.

In a Sunday announcement, Getty confirmed that its image collection would be incorporated into ChatGPT’s search and discovery functions, representing a notable change in the company’s approach. Neither party revealed the financial terms or clarified whether Getty’s visuals would be utilized for training upcoming OpenAI models.

Getty’s shares ended Monday’s session 90% higher at $1.15 in New York, marking their strongest performance since July 2022. Prior to the Juneteenth holiday weekend, the stock had declined roughly 55% year-to-date, closing at 61 cents on Thursday.

The company’s stock has suffered from the artificial-intelligence scare trade, which has impacted various market segments, including software, IT services, and traditional industries like logistics. Getty has been especially vulnerable due to concerns that OpenAI and other developers might encroach on its business. AI’s ability to generate realistic images has led to repeated conflicts between tool creators and photographers or artists whose work contributed to training these systems. After an initial period of resistance, Getty developed its own AI image generator and filed a lawsuit against Stability AI, another prominent tool developer.

Benchmark analyst Mark Zgutowicz noted that the OpenAI partnership could enhance licensing optics and alter the stock’s narrative. In a Monday research note, Zgutowicz wrote that Getty is trying to establish itself as a licensed visual-content provider for AI-native search platforms, thereby shifting the AI narrative from substitution risk to monetizable distribution—a transition that has so far been challenging in terms of recurring revenue visibility. He added that the deal should improve sentiment regarding content disintermediation risk.

OpenAI has secured multiple licensing agreements with news publishers and media companies as it ventures into video creation and advertising.

Getty reported first-quarter sales in May that fell short of projections. The company is still awaiting regulatory approval for its $3.7 billion acquisition of rival Shutterstock Inc.
