Google is investing approximately $75 million in independent film studio A24 as part of a broader artificial intelligence research partnership between the two companies, it was announced on Monday.
The collaboration brings together Google DeepMind and A24 in what the companies described as a multi-project research and development effort aimed at exploring new creative workflows and filmmaking tools powered by AI.
The partnership is intended to give A24 filmmakers direct input into the development of emerging technologies, while providing Google DeepMind with feedback from working artists.
A24, known for recent hits such as “Backrooms” and “Marty Supreme,” will work alongside DeepMind researchers to test and iterate on new tools designed to support storytelling and production processes, according to the companies.
The companies said the initiative is focused on integrating advanced AI research more directly into creative development, specifically evolving workflows used in film and entertainment.
They added that the partnership is expected to evolve over time, with specific technical goals and creative outputs to be developed as research progresses. While early efforts will focus on experimental workflows and production techniques, both sides indicated the scope of the collaboration may broaden as the program develops.
“We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them,” Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said in a statement.
“By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”
Shares of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), traded down almost 6% on Monday, on the unrelated news that DeepMind scientist John Jumper has left the company to join rival Anthropic.
