MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mayor Paul Young confirmed Tuesday that xAI will restart construction on its water recycling plant for the Memphis supercomputer.
The hope is to resume construction by 2027, Young said.
In April, xAI said it would pause construction to allow “prioritizing … more immediate projects at the site. But the plans to build the water plant have not changed.”

In a statement Tuesday, Young said the construction of the water recycling plant “is an important step forward for Memphis, our aquifer, and the long-term sustainability of our city.”
Young’s office also issued the following statement:
“Had a productive meeting with SpaceXAI President Michael Nicolls on Monday.
In the meeting they committed to resuming construction on the recycled wastewater treatment facility no later than Q1 2027.
This facility will offset water usage from both SpaceXAI and TVA. Our engagement that led to this commitment will continue until the facility is complete.”
