Anthropic’s artificial intelligence system uncovered weaknesses in highly classified U.S. government networks during a simulated attack scenario, according to a U.S. official who requested anonymity. The official stated that Anthropic collaborated with American intelligence bodies to run the assessments using its Mythos model. Within a few hours, the AI pinpointed several security gaps, though the official clarified that this did not imply the system could exploit those gaps in the same timeframe.

Project Glasswing and Congressional Mention

The evaluations were part of Anthropic’s Project Glasswing, an effort uniting tech firms to protect essential software from the serious risks Mythos could present to public safety, national security, and economic stability. Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner referenced the tests briefly during a June 11 hearing of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. He stated that the AI breached nearly all classified systems in hours rather than weeks, citing information from General Joshua Rudd, who leads both the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command.

Growing Friction with the Administration

Despite the joint work between Anthropic and federal agencies, tensions have escalated between the California company and the Trump administration. Anthropic has expressed worries about military applications of its AI, while the administration has taken steps to limit access to certain models. Earlier this month, the administration ordered Anthropic to bar foreign nationals from using its newest models, designated Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Anthropic released Fable broadly this month—a scaled-down version of the more capable Mythos, which the company has kept under tight control due to cybersecurity risks.

The directive followed by ten days an executive order from President Donald Trump that created a framework for the federal government to evaluate national security threats from cutting-edge AI systems for up to thirty days before their public launch. The order said participation by AI developers would be optional. Anthropic stated it deactivated the models for all users to follow the directive, but added that it did not consider the government’s actions justified by the security issue it had raised.

Over one hundred cybersecurity specialists and executives from firms such as Adobe and Nvidia have petitioned the government to rescind the directive, cautioning that the move could aid U.S. adversaries more than it harms them. In their letter, the signatories noted that Anthropic’s Mythos models are fairly adept at detecting software flaws and turning them into exploits—but are not exceptionally better at these tasks. Many indicated they routinely employ other foundational and open-source models for security reviews and training, and warned that removing the most effective cyber defense tools without a valid reason is dangerous at a time when America’s opponents are making swift progress.
