xAI has rolled out a new mode, /goal, within its Grok Build terminal coding agent, targeting long-running, autonomous task execution in software engineering workflows. This feature allows developers to delegate larger implementation tasks, with the agent working independently until completion and verification.

Traditionally, coding agents require constant back-and-forth between the developer and the agent for execution and verification of each step. The /goal mode streamlines this process by enabling the agent to continue working through a task, planning its approach, building a progress checklist, executing steps, and observing results until the objective is met.

Crucially, the new mode incorporates a verification step, which xAI states can involve reviewing generated code, inspecting webpages to confirm behaviour, or executing scripts to test the outcome. This ensures that the agent not only completes the task but also validates its work before reporting success, a key differentiator for autonomous runs.

Grok Build functions as a command-line interface (CLI) for software engineering, operating against local codebases by reading files and running commands. The /goal mode packages this autonomy behind a single command and provides a visible progress checklist for monitoring.

Users can manage ongoing tasks with specific steering commands such as /goal status to view live progress, /goal pause to temporarily halt work, /goal resume to pick up from where it stopped, and /goal clear to entirely drop the current objective. This provides essential control over unattended operations, especially when the agent modifies files and executes scripts independently.

Access to the /goal mode and Grok Build requires either a SuperGrok or X Premium Plus subscription. Use cases highlighted by xAI include module migration, refactoring services with test suite execution, adding new API endpoints with page inspection, and upgrading dependencies with build fixes.
