Elon Musk has firmly shut down rumors that SpaceX is diving into the smartphone market with a new artificial intelligence device.
Responding to a Wall Street Journal report claiming SpaceX had showcased an AI-focused handset prototype to investors ahead of its highly anticipated IPO, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to deliver a swift, two-word denial: “Utterly false,” News.Az reports, citing Reuters.
The initial report alleged that the prototype device was designed to run on a proprietary operating system, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips and AI technology from Musk’s own xAI startup. While the report noted the project was only in its infancy with no guarantee of ever hitting the market, Musk’s blanket denial suggests otherwise.
Despite the shutdown, the rumors didn’t come out of nowhere. SpaceX has been aggressively funneling billions into expanding its empire beyond rocket launches and Starlink satellite internet. The company has heavily invested in AI infrastructure, xAI’s Grok large language model, and space-based computing to carve out a massive stake in the ongoing AI race.
Furthermore, Musk himself has teased the idea before. In January, he remarked that a Starlink-connected phone was “not out of the question at some point,” promising that if it ever happened, it would look and function very differently from the smartphones we use today.
For now, it looks like tech enthusiasts will have to wait, as both SpaceX and Qualcomm have remained quiet following the report, and Musk has closed the book on any immediate smartphone plans.
