According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Microsoft recently concluded its worst quarterly performance since 2008, with its stock declining more than 17% over the preceding six months.

This downturn coincides with a broader software sector decline, driven by investor apprehension that artificial intelligence could replicate existing products and undermine profit margins. Despite this negative sentiment, the company is still viewed as a potential major beneficiary of AI development.

Microsoft’s generative AI assistant, Copilot, is central to its strategy. The tool functions as a conversational chatbot, automates workflows, generates content, and integrates with applications like Word and Excel. It also serves as a coding aid for developers. However, adoption has reportedly not met investor expectations, particularly when compared to the total number of Microsoft 365 subscribers.

On a recent earnings call, Microsoft’s CEO stated the company now has 15 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats alongside a larger number of enterprise chat users. The GitHub Copilot Pro Plus service was noted to have 4.7 million subscribers, reflecting a 75% annual increase.

In response to these challenges, an analyst from BNP Paribas indicated the CEO is leading a performance overhaul of Copilot, referred to internally as a code red initiative. This effort includes plans for a new Microsoft 365 E7 offering with a fully integrated AI stack. Additional products such as Agent Mode and Copilot Cowork are also slated for release, with the analyst reporting positive early feedback on the new tools.
