Over the past few months, I’ve had conversations with dozens of leaders across Mexico and Latin America who are deploying AI agents, letting their teams experiment, and moving fast. They’re right to move fast. But in nearly every case, when I ask a follow-up question \u2014 “Can you tell me exactly what data that agent is accessing? Can you walk me through every decision it’s making?” \u2014 the room goes quiet.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re in a moment of aggressive momentum. Our research\u00a0shows<\/a>\u00a0spending on AI has jumped 107% in the last year among Mexican organizations. But it also shows that only 21% of Mexican enterprises have implemented any testing, auditing, or risk assessment processes for their AI systems.<\/p>\n In other words, we’re moving fast, but we\u2019re moving blind.<\/p>\n The practical test is straightforward. At any moment, a leader should be able to answer three core questions about every AI agent operating in their business:<\/p>\n What data is this agent accessing, and is it the right data?What decisions is it making or influencing, and can we justify those decisions?What measurable value is it creating, and are the risks proportional to the value?<\/p>\n If you can’t answer those questions clearly, you have a governance problem.<\/p>\n In my\u00a0last column<\/a>, I wrote about leading by example with AI: the importance of visibly using the technology yourself. But part of leading by example means being the person who doesn\u2019t just use AI agents but uses them responsibly: asking the hard questions and setting the standard for their team to follow.\u00a0<\/p>\n To be clear, this doesn\u2019t mean you need to slow down AI deployment. It just means changing how you deploy by doing three things in parallel.\u00a0<\/p>\n First, get clear on your data. Sixty-nine percent of Mexican organizations cite inadequate data accuracy and access as their biggest barrier to AI adoption. AI is only as good as the data it learns from and the data it has permission to touch. When data is fragmented or unreliable, governance becomes impossible. You can\u2019t control what you can\u2019t see.\u00a0<\/p>\n Second, establish clear governance from the start, as part of how you design and deploy every agent. Governance should be embedded in how the agent accesses data, what decisions it\u2019s allowed to make, and what oversight mechanisms track its performance. Doing this in parallel with deployment is how you scale AI responsibly.\u00a0<\/p>\n Third, invest in making sure your teams understand both the power and the boundaries of the AI they’re working with. That includes training but also transparency. When your teams understand why guardrails exist, not just what the rules are, they become partners in governance, not obstacles to it.<\/p>\n The companies pulling ahead in AI maturity aren’t the ones spending the most money or deploying the most projects. They’re the ones who understand that governance doesn\u2019t limit what agents can do; it sets the rules and the boundaries, so humans can focus on making better decisions faster, not on second-guessing whether the agent made a mistake.<\/p>\n Because of that, enterprises running AI with built-in governance and a unified platform approach are\u00a02.6 times better<\/a> at reducing risk and\u00a02.7 times more<\/a> capable of scaling AI across the organization.<\/p>\n A governance-first mindset also has impact beyond your four walls. When customers, partners, and investors know your AI operates with clear governance and oversight, they trust you. That trust deepens relationships, expands deals, and turns skeptics into advocates. Organizations that govern AI responsibly earn the confidence of the stakeholders who decide whether to commit resources and grow with them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
