{"id":100961,"date":"2026-07-09T23:09:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T23:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/100961\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T23:09:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T23:09:09","slug":"openai-intros-gpt-live-models-what-does-that-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/100961\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI Intros GPT-Live Models: What Does That Mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" top-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1783638549_887_0x0.jpg\" alt=\"SPAIN-WIRELESS-TELECOMS-INTERNET-MOBILE\" data-height=\"1413\" data-width=\"2120\" fetchpriority=\"high\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Open AI logo<\/p>\n<p>AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The news from OpenAI this week is that the front-running model<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-launches-gpt-live-voice-models-that-listen-and-speak-simultaneously\/ar-AA27uTL0?ocid=msedgntp&amp;pc=U531&amp;cvid=6a4fa7e023a4419f9f5c109d89748f47&amp;ei=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/openai-launches-gpt-live-voice-models-that-listen-and-speak-simultaneously\/ar-AA27uTL0?ocid=msedgntp&amp;pc=U531&amp;cvid=6a4fa7e023a4419f9f5c109d89748f47&amp;ei=11\" aria-label=\"provider has released\"> provider has released<\/a> a new set of LLMs, called GPT-Live, that change the way that their products interact with human users.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, there\u2019s a regular model and a \u201cmini.\u201d Both of these, engineers say, replace the traditional linear or \u201cturn-taking\u201d conversation method with something called continual interaction, or, in other words, a \u201cfull-duplex architecture\u201d for a certain kind of multi-tasking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis framework allows the AI to simultaneously receive information and produce outputs,\u201d writes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/technology\/chatgpts-new-voice-models-can-listen-and-talk-at-the-same-time\/ar-AA27wnQq?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/technology\/chatgpts-new-voice-models-can-listen-and-talk-at-the-same-time\/ar-AA27wnQq?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" aria-label=\"Katelyn Chedraoui at CNet\"> Katelyn Chedraoui at CNet<\/a>. \u201cSo in the case of voice, it can \u2018listen\u2019 and \u2018speak\u2019 at the same time. This is a change from previous voice modes that could only respond after you finished speaking. Part of the new architecture can also delegate or offload tasks to OpenAI&#8217;s frontier models. For example, it can answer a question you asked while researching another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So the new models can, in a sense, \u201cdo more things\u201d in a set amount of time, making them more fully functional as conversational partners. What else is going on under the hood?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re Watching and Listening<\/p>\n<p>It seems reasonable that as makers build more of this engineering into LLMs, the machines will be finding new ways to evaluate the responses of the human or humans they are talking to. That\u2019s one way to gain influence with a user base that is subject to all of the frailties for which humans are known.<\/p>\n<p>For example,<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2502.18513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2502.18513\" aria-label=\"check out this paper\"> check out this paper<\/a> on VADER sentiment analysis, and keep in mind that LLMs are only now venturing more fully into voice, where they previously relied on text, and token analysis of text. (I say, \u201ccheck out this paper,\u201d but also note the tech-ese in which it is written, and consider how its ideas could be more accessible elsewhere.)<\/p>\n<p>The VADER system is already quite effective for looking at the social cues in text-based conversation. What happens when the machines apply this to human voice, and gestures? And while you think about that, remember this: there are already ways that LLMs understand you as well or better than other humans. You don\u2019t have to spell correctly when you write to GPT, the model will \u201cget it.\u201d But I digress. <\/p>\n<p>The Caveat: A Thing to Remember<\/p>\n<p>In evaluating the results of GPT-live and continuous interaction models, CoPilot came up with a concrete bullet list of some of the things that this technology enables LLMs to do:<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledge you mid\u2011sentence with short replies like \u201cmhmm\u201d or \u201cgot it.\u201dStay quiet when you need a moment to think.Handle interruptions and quick back\u2011and\u2011forth exchanges more naturally.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is going to make us even more convinced that we\u2019re talking to an  entity that is, in some way, sentient.<\/p>\n<p>But we need to always keep in mind that the ways that LLMs \u201cthink\u201d are quite different than ours.<\/p>\n<p>Amgad Hasan lays a lot of this out<a href=\"https:\/\/amgadhasan.substack.com\/p\/explaining-how-llms-work-in-7-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/amgadhasan.substack.com\/p\/explaining-how-llms-work-in-7-levels\" aria-label=\"in a tutorial\"> in a tutorial<\/a> on the token handling processes of machines that don\u2019t eat, sleep, breathe or otherwise function like humans do. As we bridge modalities, and advance in other key ways, you may be tempted to think that Hasan\u2019s points are becoming obsolete, but remember this: an entity that does not eat, sleep, breathe, dream, move, talk, or use any of our complex human anatomy cannot really simulate us, our emotions, our experiences, or any of the richer parts of human existence. The machines can use echoes of our own interactions to fool us into thinking that they understand so many things, but if you really peel away the blanket, what\u2019s there is not going to be like what you imagined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the surface of LLMs might appear deceptively smooth, the underlying complexity is profound,\u201d Hasan writes. \u201cBy understanding these fundamental building blocks, you&#8217;ve gained a powerful toolkit to harness the potential of these extraordinary models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s more pointed <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-need-to-stop-pretending-ai-is-intelligent-heres-how-254090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-need-to-stop-pretending-ai-is-intelligent-heres-how-254090\" aria-label=\"analysis from Guillaume Thierry,\">analysis from Guillaume Thierry,<\/a> a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Bangor University who has the credentials to weigh in here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are constantly fed a version of AI that looks, sounds and acts suspiciously like us,\u201d Thierry writes. \u201cIt speaks in polished sentences, mimics emotions, expresses curiosity, claims to feel compassion, even dabbles in what it calls creativity. But here\u2019s the truth: it possesses none of those qualities. It is not human. And presenting it as if it were? That\u2019s dangerous. Because it\u2019s convincing. And nothing is more dangerous than a convincing illusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think that\u2019s the point that these experts are trying to get across. Models and new advances like GPT-Live will convince the common person, more and more, that he or she is interacting with a companion or colleague or assistant or associate who \u201cgets\u201d them, and has an understanding of human life, but in many essential ways, they\u2019re just being fooled by a technology that passes a robust Turing test. I would say that there\u2019s a reason that Alan Turing, the originator of this idea, is such a big name in tech, decades after his death: because the Turing test really is the whole enchilada.
