By doing so, the country aims to improve controls, limitations and audits on what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitymagazine.com\/articles\/102346-93-of-organizations-use-or-plan-to-use-ai-agents-for-sensitive-security-tasks\" id=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI agents<\/a> can access as well as what actions they can perform on behalf of humans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Philipp Pointner, Chief of Digital Identity at Jumio, discusses the implications of this and shares essential next steps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstonia\u2019s decision to assign digital identification numbers to AI agents is setting a precedent on how we must audit what agents can do on behalf of an individual,\u201d says Pointner. \u201cWith AI assistants having the ability to open accounts, book travel, and make purchases on behalf of a human user, the traditional parameters of identity verification and compliance frameworks like KYC (Know Your Customer) are disrupted. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDigital identity systems are evolving beyond simply verifying the identity of a human user. We are moving toward an era of \u2018Know Your Agent\u2019 where traditional KYC processes must adapt to verify an AI assistant has the appropriate permissions and authority to act on that person\u2019s behalf. Estonia\u2019s initiative recognizes that digital trust requires identity systems that can distinguish between human identity and agent authority. By creating these auditable permissions for agents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitymagazine.com\/articles\/102398-security-organizations-reveal-threat-management-fails-to-match-visibility\" id=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">security<\/a> and user control can be preserved, which will become a foundational requirement if agentic AI is going to operate safely at scale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next step in identifying agents and securing them will be interoperability.
