Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Omar Yaghi, an immigrant to the United States who shared last year\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/08\/science\/nobel-prize-chemistry.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a>, has left his faculty post at the University of California, Berkeley, for one in China, where he will lead an institute using artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of new materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Dr. Yaghi\u2019s move comes amid the Trump administration\u2019s continuing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/17\/us\/politics\/trump-congress-budget-cuts.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disruptions of U.S. science funding<\/a> and China\u2019s efforts to woo international scientists with hefty budgets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Last week, Tsinghua University in Beijing welcomed Dr. Yaghi in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tsinghua.edu.cn\/en\/info\/1244\/14984.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">an appointment ceremony<\/a>, calling him one of the world\u2019s foremost chemists. The university said he saw his new post as an opportunity \u201cnot to slow down, not to repeat what has already been done, but to do science with more energy, more intensity, and more ambition than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cChina is increasing its investment in science overall, including chemistry,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/person\/alessandra-zimmermann\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Alessandra Zimmermann<\/a>, a budget analyst at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a scientific group based in Washington, D.C. The best measures of scientific accomplishment, she added, show that China \u201chas been outperforming the U.S. in top chemistry papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Last year, three of America\u2019s six winners of science Nobels were born outside the country. In this century, overall, the \u00e9migr\u00e9 fraction for U.S. Nobels in physics, chemistry and medicine <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nfap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Immigrants-and-Nobel-Prizes.DAY-OF-RELEASE.Oct-2025.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">now stands at 40 percent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In an interview, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.materials.ucsb.edu\/people\/faculty\/ram-seshadri\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Ram Seshadri<\/a>, a professor of chemistry and materials science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, said Dr. Yaghi\u2019s move to China shed light on a fast-emerging dynamic between the two nations. \u201cThey\u2019ve overtaken us in many areas of materials science and chemistry,\u201d he said, referring to China. \u201cThey\u2019re willing to invest very large sums of money to attract new talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">A subfield of chemistry, materials science is the underlying force behind many of the innovations that define modern life, from the silicon chips in smartphones to the carbon fibers in racing bikes to the biomaterials of medical implants. By nature, it\u2019s an interdisciplinary field that investigates the relationship between the structure of materials at an atomic or molecular scale and their macroscopic properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Dr. Yaghi was born in Amman, Jordan, to Palestinian refugees whose one-room home <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bzM_qeOumss\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">lacked electricity and running water<\/a>. Early on, he became fascinated with a schoolbook\u2019s depiction of atomic building blocks. When he was 15, his father, a butcher, sent him to the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Last year, before flying to Stockholm to receive his Nobel Prize, Dr. Yaghi in an interview with The New York Times voiced concern about Mr. Trump\u2019s immigration policies, saying that they endanger the nation\u2019s system of universities, companies and governments that promote scientific excellence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cI think it\u2019s regrettable,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/10\/science\/nobel-prize-immigrants-science.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he said<\/a> of Mr. Trump\u2019s nationalism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cWe have to know that people coming from different backgrounds improve the level for everybody involved,\u201d he added. \u201cThat\u2019s an amazing story. Great thinkers can improve not only the U.S. but the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Dr. Yaghi joined the University of California, Berkeley, in 2012, and while there earned many awards for his scientific advances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">He received his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2025\/yaghi\/facts\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Prize<\/a> for helping discover a world of chemistry in which molecular building blocks are assembled into structures that possess vast internal surface areas \u2014 the largest of any known substance. His porous structures can act like sponges that readily absorb, store and release gases and vapors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">He named them <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.berkeley.edu\/news\/meet-metal-organic-frameworks-chemistry%E2%80%99s-new-miracle-materials#:~:text=Metal%2Dorganic%20frameworks%20(MOFs)%20are%20a%20new%20class,**Arizona%20State%20University**%20*%20**Lawrence%20Berkeley%20Lab**\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">metal-organic frameworks<\/a>. The metal atoms form an adjustable framework that can hold chemicals associated with life \u2014 carbon atoms in particular. While deeply theoretical, the frameworks are so radical, innovative and flexible in nature that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41563-025-02147-4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">materials experts and companies foresee<\/a> many commercial uses for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The frameworks can, for instance, harvest water from desert air. In 2018, Dr. Yaghi\u2019s students at Berkeley <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2019\/08\/27\/water-harvester-makes-it-easy-to-quench-your-thirst-in-the-desert\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">tested the idea<\/a> in the Mojave Desert in California, finding that a small passive harvester could each day produce nearly three cups of pure, drinkable water. The device is now nearing commercialization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In the interview with The Times, Dr. Yaghi credited the invention to his boyhood efforts to secure water for his family. The municipal pipes worked for only a few hours every week or two. That hardship, he added, shows how the diverse experiences of \u00e9migr\u00e9s can lead to unexpected breakthroughs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Dr. Yaghi has longstanding ties with Tsinghua University.
