Christopher Nolan <\/a>is not worried about leaving the future of filmmaking in the hands of younger generations<\/a>, so long as they continue to reject \u201cAI slop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning Oppenheimer director<\/a>, 55, is a prominent critic of the technology, often warning of its \u201cterrifying possibilities.\u201d While he has acknowledged certain benefits to its use in moviemaking, he has maintained his preference for practical effects and in-camera filming techniques. <\/p>\n

Despite the growing push to rely on AI in nearly every aspect of life<\/a>, Nolan said he has noticed a \u201crapid wholesale dismissal of a supposedly foundational jump in technology\u201d among younger filmmakers, a trend he feels bodes well for the future of art. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo much energy has been expended on bringing in AI, but if you look at that generation\u2019s reaction, they\u2019re utterly rejecting it,\u201d the British director said in a new interview with The Telegraph<\/a>, citing 21-year-old Backrooms director Kane Parsons and 26-year-old Obsession director Curry Barker <\/a>as examples of younger filmmakers\u2019 embracing practical effects. <\/p>\n

He added that his four young adult children \u2014 Flora, Rory, Magnus, and Oliver, whom he shares with his wife and longtime producing partner Emma Thomas <\/a>\u2014 also have an \u201cimmediate and harsh\u201d reaction to AI. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey see it for what it is very quickly \u2014 and it\u2019s much easier for them to identify it, because it grew out of an online world they know really well,\u201d Nolan explained, clarifying, \u201cAnd while that doesn\u2019t mean that every aspect of the technology is useless or meaningless, in filmmaking it\u2019s hitting at exactly the wrong time.\u201d <\/p>\n

He further argued that \u201cafter years of driving towards heavily virtual environments, we\u2019re seeing a renewed interest in more tactile, more real forms of storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nolan is famous for avoiding excessive digital technology in his work, and he relied on visual effects and practical effects to create characters in his next movie, The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic poem.<\/p>\n

Out in theaters next Friday, The Odyssey <\/a>stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson and Elliot Page. The movie <\/a>follows Odysseus\u2019s (Damon) decade-long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War as he battles monsters, gods and other mythical foes while his wife Penelope (Hathaway) fends off suitors and son Telemachus (Holland) searches for him.<\/p>\n

The film has already won over early viewers<\/a>, with many praising it as \u201cstaggering,\u201d \u201cbreathtaking\u201d and \u201ca filmmaking feast.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Independent\u2019s chief film and TV correspondent Jacob Stolworthy described it as \u201cNolan\u2019s biggest film to date.\u201d<\/p>\n
