Now, when users enter a search query, they encounter a single, integrated explanatory page written directly by AI rather than a separate list of sources. Source links are naturally embedded as citations within the body of the AI-generated page.<\/p>\n<p>This overhaul represents the full-scale expansion of the generative search summary feature Google first introduced in 2024 under the name &#8216;AI Overviews.&#8217; Google had been testing this feature in phases and has now completely transitioned the default search results interface to AI-generated summaries.<\/p>\n<p>This transformation fundamentally disrupts the internet information distribution structure that has remained firmly in place for a quarter-century. Previously, publishers created content, Google ranked pages, and users clicked links to visit those sites. For content creators and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) professionals, &#8216;clicks&#8217; were synonymous with revenue and the core metric of survival.<\/p>\n<p>However, the rules of the game have now completely changed. Content &#8216;visibility&#8217; is no longer determined by ranking on a search results page, but by whether it is &#8216;cited&#8217; within an AI-generated answer. Publishers and the SEO industry have already experienced a structural crisis of declining search traffic over the past two years, but this full-scale introduction of generative results pages is expected to accelerate that decline to the level of a &#8216;structural cliff.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the core focus of digital marketing is rapidly shifting from traditional SEO to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Content that is easy for AI to extract and cite\u2014specifically, content rich in entity information and structured data\u2014has become the new standard for survival in the search ecosystem. Content tailored to the old click-based economy is expected to gradually vanish from search results.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s full-scale transition to AI search is likely to further intensify conflicts with global regulatory authorities. Antitrust debates are already underway in the European Union (EU) and the United States concerning Google&#8217;s abuse of search market dominance and the issue of compensating publishers for AI-generated summaries. This move, which allows AI to monopolistically generate and display search results, is highly likely to escalate these legal and institutional conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the South Korean search market, homegrown search engine Naver is countering Google&#8217;s offensive with its own independent AI strategy. According to the internet statistics site &#8216;Internet Trend,&#8217; Naver&#8217;s domestic search market share in South Korea reached 64.28% in the first half of 2026 (January 1\u2013June 30). This represents a 2.46 percentage point increase from the previous half-year period (61.82%). In contrast, Google&#8217;s share stood at 28.37% during the same period, a decline of 2.32 percentage points from the previous half. The gap between the two companies widened from 31.13 percentage points in the second half of last year to 35.91 percentage points in the first half of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Naver recently laid the groundwork for this rebound by officially launching its conversational AI search service, &#8216;AI Tab,&#8217; across both PC and mobile platforms to strengthen its search competitiveness. The AI Tab is a service designed to understand users&#8217; search intent and context, expanding the scope of exploration through continuous conversation. It is built to go beyond simple information retrieval and connect users to real-world actions such as venue reservations or product purchases. In this process, the &#8216;Green Dot,&#8217; which had been the symbol of Naver&#8217;s mobile search for eight years since 2018, disappeared and was replaced by the AI Tab button.<\/p>\n<p>Naver plans to accelerate monetization by introducing an advertising model within the AI Tab during the fourth quarter of this year. A Naver representative stated, &#8220;With the launch of the AI Tab, Naver users can enjoy a more convenient AI search experience across both PC and mobile environments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The IT industry views the convergence of Google&#8217;s full-scale AI search transition and Naver&#8217;s AI Tab launch as making AI-based search services a decisive variable in the future competition for search engine market share.
