{"id":105559,"date":"2026-07-14T15:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T15:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/105559\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T15:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T15:46:08","slug":"hachette-scott-turow-sue-google-for-using-books-to-train-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/105559\/","title":{"rendered":"Hachette, Scott Turow Sue Google for Using Books to Train AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Major book publisher Hachette Book Group and bestselling author Scott Turow joined educational publisher Cengage Learning and scientific publisher Elsevier in filing a <a href=\"https:\/\/publishers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Hachette-v.-Google-Dkt.-1-Complaint2.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lawsuit<\/a> against Google on Friday, accusing the tech giant of using millions of copyrighted books and journal articles without their permission to build its Gemini artificial intelligence models.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, claims Google built its AI by copying books and other written works from a variety of sources \u2014 including Google Books, online libraries and allegedly pirated websites \u2014 without paying or obtaining permission from the authors and publishers who own them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesperate to maintain its online dominance, Google abandoned its early motto of \u2018Don\u2019t be evil,\u2019\u201d the complaint states, accusing the company of carrying out \u201cone of the most prolific infringements of copyrighted materials in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs include Hachette, one of the world\u2019s largest book publishers; Elsevier, the publisher of scientific journals including \u201cThe Lancet\u201d and \u201cCell\u201d; Cengage, a leading educational publisher; and Turow, the bestselling author of \u201cPresumed Guilty\u201d and \u201cPresumed Innocent.\u201d They argue Google built a multibillion-dollar AI business by using their work while bypassing a growing market in which AI companies pay publishers to license content for training.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also argues Gemini now competes directly with the books it learned from by generating detailed summaries, textbook-style explanations and other written content that could reduce demand for the original materials. The complaint cites examples involving Turow\u2019s novels and Cengage textbooks to illustrate their claim.<\/p>\n<p>The publishers are seeking damages and a court order preventing Google from continuing the alleged copyright infringement.
