{"id":108166,"date":"2026-07-16T13:11:18","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T13:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/108166\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T13:11:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T13:11:18","slug":"eu-requires-google-to-expand-access-for-ai-and-search-rivals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/108166\/","title":{"rendered":"EU requires Google to expand access for AI and search rivals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The move by the European Commission, which acts as the EU competition enforcer, came six months after the regulator opened so-called\u00a0specification proceedings\u00a0to assist the world&#8217;s \u200bmost popular internet search engine to\u00a0comply with the Digital Markets Act, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">News.Az<\/a> reports, citing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/google-required-open-up-ai-search-engine-rivals-under-eu-mandated-changes-2026-07-16\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/news\/google-is-begging-europe-s-top-court-to-drop-a-massive-penalty\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> reiterated its \u200bcriticism of the EU-mandated changes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s decisions risk undermining vital privacy and \u2060security guardrails for millions of Europeans,&#8221; Google&#8217;s lawyer Kent Walker said in an email.<br \/>&#8220;We \u200bhave repeatedly offered solutions to safeguard users while satisfying the DMA&#8217;s goals, but these rulings \u200bdiscount extensive evidence of user harm,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said Google will open up 11 features on its Android operating system to AI rivals to access key functionalities and better compete with Google&#8217;s Gemini \u200bAI service.<\/p>\n<p>This would mean that users can activate a rival AI assistant via voice \u200bcommands, similar to the &#8216;hey Google&#8217; command, to book a taxi or search for information on places. Users \u200cwill \u2060benefit from the changes from July 2027 in the next iteration of Android.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission said the measures contain robust safeguards to protect users&#8217; privacy and device security, and that Google will only offer the 11 features to rivals who fulfil security and privacy criteria.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bEU decision also requires \u200bGoogle to share the \u2060data that it collects to optimise its own search services with OpenAI and other AI chatbots with search functionalities, subject to anonymisation.<\/p>\n<p>Google \u200bcan first assess whether rivals pose cybersecurity and data protection risks \u200bbefore it \u2060opens up to them.
