Faculty and staff already have access. At CU Boulder, the Artificial Intelligence Strategic Steering Committee is overseeing a working group that’s creating an AI training module that will be required for students to complete before they can use CU’s version of ChatGPT.

“This will ensure our community has the tools and understanding needed to use AI effectively and responsibly,” Provost Ann Stevens said in a release.

The university initially planned to roll out ChatGPT services to everyone in March after entering into a $2.1 million contract with OpenAI. But CU delayed the rollout after people on campus raised concerns about privacy, academic misuse and cost.

CU Boulder also announced on Tuesday that it is expanding its Artificial Intelligence Strategic Steering Committee, which was created in 2024. There are eight members of the committee, made up of leaders from the Provost’s Office, the Office of Information Technology, the Research and Innovation Office, the Boulder Faculty Assembly, the Staff Council and CU student government groups.

The committee will charge several AI subcommittees with specific tasks in research, administrative operations, teaching, learning and student success.

The university has created an updated charge, or action plan for the committee, that expands the committee’s role. It will be CU Boulder’s central coordinating body for AI, providing guidance on AI-related opportunities, assigning AI initiatives across teaching and learning, monitoring AI compliance and communicating and educating the campus community about AI.

“Campus leadership expects the expanded AI Strategic Steering Committee to create a more unified, strategic approach to artificial intelligence at CU Boulder,” CU Boulder spokesperson Nicole Cousins wrote in an email. “The group will provide clear guidance, strengthen coordination across teaching, research and operations, and support informed decision making. It will also expand training and improve AI literacy while ensuring more equitable access to tools. Together, these efforts are intended to move the campus toward a cohesive, principles-driven AI ecosystem and position CU Boulder as a leader in responsible AI use.”

One emphasis of the expanded committee is collaboration with shared governance groups, including the Boulder Faculty Assembly, Staff Council and student governments.

“We appreciate campus leadership for recognizing the urgency and complexity of AI and for engaging shared governance as a partner in this work,” David Paradis, chair of the Boulder Faculty Assembly, said in the release. “This thoughtful and inclusive approach will help ensure students, faculty and staff are well supported as we navigate these changes together.”

Subscribe to our new newsletter to get CU Boulder’s latest news sent straight to your inbox.

Starting in August, students will be required to complete an AI training module before they’re allowed to access…

[7
43910,50122,580,2130,76,11687,2853,66,157
post-109113","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-openai","tag-boulder","tag-boulder-county","tag-chatgpt","tag-colorado","tag-education","tag-front-range","tag-latest-headlines","tag-news","tag-openai
["GET
