Based on public regulatory filings and foreign media reports, the total deal valuation exceeds $1 billion (approximately NT$32 billion). APR Energy&#8217;s mobile generation capacity of over 1GW is expected to support the future massive electricity demands of xAI&#8217;s Colossus supercomputer located in Memphis, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was not proactively announced by xAI but was revealed in public filings with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Since the transaction met the filing requirements under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act and received early termination of the antitrust review waiting period, the relevant information became public.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by Electrek, Musk paid over $50 million (approximately NT$1.5 billion) to acquire the shares of a minority shareholder holding roughly a 5% stake in APR Energy. Based on this, the valuation of the entire company exceeds $1 billion. Unlike high-profile deals such as the acquisition of Twitter (now X), xAI did not issue a press release for this transaction, nor has it formally announced the completion of the acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>APR Energy specializes in providing rapidly deployable mobile power generation units. Its primary fleet consists of trailer-mounted gas turbines and diesel generators, with a total generation capacity exceeding 1GW, capable of establishing large-scale power supply at designated locations within a short timeframe. The market widely believes this acquisition is primarily aimed at meeting the needs of the Colossus 1 and the planned Colossus 2 super data centers that xAI is building in Memphis. As AI models continue to scale, the power consumption of hyperscale data centers is soaring, making electricity one of the most critical strategic resources for the AI industry.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Musk did not choose to rely on the solar and Megapack large-scale energy storage systems from his Tesla energy business this time, opting instead to directly acquire a mobile power generation company. Analysts point out that the main reason is that large AI data centers applying to connect to the public grid often face waiting periods ranging from months to years, along with complex infrastructure upgrades and environmental review processes.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the rapid increase in data centers across many parts of the United States has also sparked resident dissatisfaction over rising electricity prices. PJM Interconnection, one of the largest U.S. grid operators, previously noted that the expansion of AI data centers has led to massive grid upgrade demands, causing electricity prices in some areas to surge by approximately 76%, making local governments and residents increasingly cautious about new data center grid connections.<\/p>\n<p>However, xAI&#8217;s use of gas turbines for power has also sparked environmental controversy. According to local media reports, residents near the Colossus data center in Memphis have filed lawsuits against xAI and Musk, alleging that the company is using mobile gas turbines that have not obtained full permits, causing air pollution, and arguing that the pollution primarily affects the local African American community.<\/p>\n<p>Although the U.S. Department of Justice recently expressed support for the Colossus 2 project, deeming it beneficial for national security-related missions, the administrative hearing process regarding the legality of the gas turbine usage has not yet concluded, and the related disputes remain unresolved.<\/p>\n<p>To alleviate local backlash, Musk recently announced a 50% discount on Starlink residential internet services for residents of Memphis and the neighboring Southaven area, aiming to improve community relations.
