Trips to the grocery store and gas station are more painful than they were last year, and rising costs are impacting the decisions of both households and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a snapshot of prominent economic data and news that occurred over the past week and what it potentially means for you.<\/p>\n<p>Massive AI build-out poses latest inflation threat<\/p>\n<p>American consumers \u2014 and the Federal Reserve \u2014 are being hit with another <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sony-playstation-price-increase-gaming-b3e056e80192e612b74a56769683ece6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high-cost headache<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The gusher of investment in data centers \u2014 likely <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tech-stocks-ai-investments-8a0ff4c95d5cae6f65c6e2ba03047058\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">topping $700 billion<\/a> this year \u2014 to power <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ai-inflation-federal-reserve-434f02e62a02f9b92e57995d9375df57\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> has made memory chips, computer processors, and other equipment, as well as electricity, more expensive. Such increases could lead the central bank to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/federal-reserve-warsh-inflation-3ec0b0c2fe05e3833e324fa522a1882a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lift its key interest rate<\/a> later this year to cool spending and bring down inflation. Higher rates from the Fed often boost borrowing costs for auto loans, mortgages, and business loans. <\/p>\n<p>US inflation cooled in June<\/p>\n<p>U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-trump-food-prices-gas-53d221aa918c466172af494ba7debc00\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation<\/a> cooled last month as the cost of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/oil-gasoline-prices-iran-trump-strait-72181b48494a6367c40cf6e9a817e6b4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gas<\/a>, clothes, and used cars fell, providing some relief to consumers, while underlying price pressures also cooled more than expected. <\/p>\n<p>Prices dropped 0.4% in June from May, the largest monthly drop in four years, the Labor Department <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/cpi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said Tuesday<\/a>. On a yearly basis, inflation declined to 3.5%, down from a year-over-year gain of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/consumer-prices-inflation-war-gas-878f6759c93fcb078aeefffe19d4dfa5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4.2% in May<\/a> and lower than many economists expected.<\/p>\n<p>Yet oil prices rose for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-oil-iran-trump-ai-6807d21c72974fbac48356f83eeebbce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a second day Tuesday<\/a> as the United States <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-hormuz-strait-war-july-14-2026-abd060c55feea216625689e57d8f76be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renewed attacks on Iran<\/a> and President Donald Trump announced a new blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for about one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil. And many Americans have soured on the economy after five years of elevated inflation, posing a risk to Trump and Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Average 30-year US mortgage rate climbs, highest level in nearly a year<\/p>\n<p>The average long-term U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/interest-rates-home-sales-mortgage-rates-housing-7b1788905df990d8030f67e0f62afa7d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mortgage rate<\/a> climbed this week to its highest level in nearly a year, driving up borrowing costs for prospective homebuyers.<\/p>\n<p>The benchmark 30-year fixed rate mortgage rate rose to 6.55% from 6.49% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. One year ago, the average rate was 6.75%.<\/p>\n<p>Higher mortgage rates can add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for borrowers, limiting homebuyers\u2019 purchasing power at a time when affordability challenges continue to sideline many aspiring homeowners.<\/p>\n<p>Retail sales rise modestly amid economic uncertainty<\/p>\n<p>Shoppers slowed their spending in June from May amid continuing economic uncertainty and fading benefits from generous government tax refunds.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/retail-sales-inflation-gas-65f5a2476b28c19ebdada5ec287160d8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Retail sales<\/a> rose 0.2% in June, after being up a revised 1% in May, according to the Commerce Department\u2019s report released on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Excluding business at gas stations, retail sales were up 0.7%<\/p>\n<p>Business at clothing and accessories stores slipped 0.3%, while online sales rose 1.9% fueled by spending surrounding Amazon\u2019s Prime Day event, which was held from June 23 through June 26.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>US producer prices fall, but outlook is cloudy<\/p>\n<p>U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/producer-prices-inflation-wholesale-033764304e871cea56bd0fc501aee294\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wholesale inflation<\/a> fell from May to June on plunging energy prices, but intensifying hostilities with Iran are clouding the outlook.<\/p>\n<p>The Labor Department reported Wednesday that its producer price index \u2014 which captures inflation before it reaches consumers \u2014 dropped 0.3% from May. Compared to a year earlier, wholesale prices were up 5.5% in June, decelerating from a 6% increase the month before. Gasoline prices plunged 12% in June but are still up nearly 43% from June 2025, pushed higher by the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core wholesale prices were up 4.7% from June 2025 and 0.2% from May.<\/p>\n<p>US unemployment claims decline, fewest in 10 weeks<\/p>\n<p>Filings for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-4ad283af1308077358aa2b038cb6e64d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unemployment benefits<\/a> fell last week to the lowest level in 10 weeks as U.S. layoffs remain historically low.<\/p>\n<p>The number of Americans applying for jobless aid in the week ending July 11 dropped by 8,000 to 208,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That\u2019s well below the 219,000 new applications forecast by analysts surveyed by the data firm FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>Weekly filings for unemployment benefits are considered a proxy for layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the U.S. job market.<\/p>\n<p>In its more comprehensive June jobs report earlier this month, the government reported that employers <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jobs-economy-hiring-labor-49c7a993b394e6ae3f801c8e3c0d39dd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled back on hiring in June<\/a>, adding only 57,000 jobs.
