Everyone wants to thrive in their careers. Those in the know \u2014 especially, as of late, in tech \u2014 are not just grasping for satisfaction. They are trying to enter what they call their \u201czone of genius.\u201d<\/p>\n
The concept, popularized by Gay Hendricks in his 2009 self-help book, \u201cThe Big Leap,\u201d describes the intersection between one\u2019s skills and passions. When you\u2019re in the zone of genius, \u201cit\u2019s not exactly creativity or workplace satisfaction,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cIt\u2019s freedom, it\u2019s zest, it\u2019s energy.\u201d Mr. Hendricks believes he was the first to use the term.<\/p>\n
Ideally, he said, one could find work that sits in that zone and then start to eliminate everything else. In his own career, he offered, he managed to cut out work that he performed with mere competence to focus more fully on writing, which he is both good at and loves to do.<\/p>\n
Lately, as workers anticipate the incursion of artificial intelligence and other unknowns into their careers, the term is cropping up all over X, LinkedIn, tech podcasts<\/a> and newsletters<\/a>. The venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz even called a podcast<\/a> that it started in 2023 \u201cZone of Genius.\u201d<\/p>\n How it\u2019s pronounced<\/p>\n \/z\u014dn \u0259v j\u0113n-y\u0259s\/<\/p>\n And the term\u2019s appeal goes beyond Silicon Valley: The concept was the subject of a feature<\/a> in Toastmaster Magazine last summer, and of a webinar for founders hosted last year<\/a> by the Tory Burch Foundation. In a March article on her lifestyle site Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow said<\/a> that her stylist\u2019s \u201cabsolute zone of genius is red carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI love the word genius,\u201d said Mr. Hendricks, who has written many books while working as a career coach for decades. \u201cIt\u2019s a very juicy, rich word.\u201d While many people hesitate to identify as a genius or to acknowledge they have genius in them, he said, Silicon Valley leaders are often primed to see themselves in that way.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re steeped in the idea that there is something special about them,\u201d he said, which makes it easier, in his experience, to help them understand and refine their approach to their zone of genius. <\/p>\n Vidushi Mishti Sharma, 31, has had what she describes as a \u201cmeandering and nonlinear\u201d career path since graduating from college in 2017. She reflected on the zone of genius concept as she crafted her own jobs at a couple of start-ups, including her current role as \u201chead of narratives\u201d at Clay, an A.I. sales start-up. And she has spoken with many young people interested in paving their own paths.<\/p>\n \u201cRoles are changing so fast with A.I., we don\u2019t even know what engineering will look like in a year,\u201d she said in an interview. That people are responding to shifts in the market by seeking out jobs that are exciting to them, and not just traditionally prestigious, is \u201cone glimmer of hope amid a lot of the doom and gloom that people have been feeling,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n Mr. Hendricks, who started coaching tech executives half a century ago, is pleased that the idea is resonating with younger people, who he has noticed are quick to grasp it.<\/p>\n \u201cI obviously didn\u2019t write it as something that was going to catch on in the culture and become a meme sort of thing,\u201d he said.
