This is happening not because Apple is gaining value, but because Nvidia\u2019s stock is losing value. Investors have been selling off the chipmaker\u2019s shares amid a <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/technology\/ai\/articles\/investors-rotate-within-ai-trade-102131863.html\">broader market rethink<\/a> over how much artificial intelligence related companies should be worth. <\/p>\n<p>When <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tylerroush\/2026\/07\/17\/apple-unseats-nvidia-as-worlds-largest-company\/\">Apple briefly overtook Nvidia<\/a> on Friday, Daniel Newman, CEO of the tech advisory firm The Futurm Group, had a pithy response. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually tweeted something out that just had one word and it said: \u2018dumb,\u2019&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>Because, Newman said, while Apple will likely keep selling lots of iPhones and make lots of money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not anywhere close to what we expect Nvidia to do in the future years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Newman said what\u2019s happening in the markets now is that investors are growing a bit more cautious after two years of <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2026\/06\/03\/can-big-techs-spending-spree-on-ai-infrastructure-last\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exuberance over AI.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Daron Acemoglu, an institute professor at MIT who researches the economic underpinnings of the AI boom, said caution is warranted. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole industry could have a shakeup,\u201d Acemoglu said.<\/p>\n<p>A shakeup that would happen if profits \u2014 when and if they materialize \u2014 don\u2019t justify the enormous spending on AI, which is forecasted at $<a class=\"externallink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2026-05-19-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-ai-spending-to-grow-47-percent-in-2026\">2.59 trillion <\/a>globally this year alone. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think anybody has come up with a reasonable scenario in which, in two or three years&#8217; time, we&#8217;re going to see trillion dollars of revenue,\u201d Acemoglu said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there are questions about whether big tech firms will keep spending massively to <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2026\/07\/15\/new-york-pauses-data-centers-over-water-and-power-concerns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">build data centers.<\/a> Newman said earnings reports this week from Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and others will be key. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody&#8217;s been kind of waiting for who blinks,\u201d he said. \u201c[Are] any of these <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/hyperscale\">hyperscalers<\/a> going to say we&#8217;re not going to spend what we said we&#8217;re going to spend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If they say that, Newman said, that would likely spark a further selloff in stocks related to the AI buildout. <\/p>\n<p>Related Topics<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Apple and Nvidia are neck-and-neck for the crown of the world\u2019s most valuable company.
