But as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ai-chatbots-are-evolving-in-one-scary-way-11770554\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> takes on a more active role, concerns are growing about what happens when it gets things wrong\u2014and who ultimately pays the price.<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11720032\" alt=\"\" caption=\"A Target logo is displayed at the entrance to a store on March 6, 2026 in Moorpark, CA\" captionoverride=\"File photo: A Target store on March 6, 2026 in Moorpark, CA (Kevin Carter\/Getty Images)\" credit=\"Kevin Carter\" sourcealt=\"Getty Images\" sources=\"[]\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;aspect-ratio:inherit;object-fit:cover\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Copy-of-32-image-2026-03-23T110227.753.png\"\/>Target&#8217;s Updated Terms for AI<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/target\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Target<\/a>\u2019s updated terms state that transactions made by its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ai-agents-can-now-rent-humans-11550979\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI agent<\/a> are \u201cconsidered transactions authorized by you,\u201d even if the outcome doesn\u2019t match what the user intended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The company also acknowledges limitations, noting in its terms that \u201cTarget does not purport to guarantee that an Agentic Commerce Agent will act exactly as you intend in all circumstances,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/111962-target-puts-customers-hook-ai-shopping-assistant-errors.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TechSpot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The development comes as Target deepens its investment in AI through a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/openai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited to work with Target as they weave intelligence throughout their business to create useful and joyful experiences for their customers and their employees,\u201d Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, said in a statement published by OpenAI in November 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Meanwhile, Target executive vice president Prat Vemana said the company aims to make shopping \u201cas easy and joyful as browsing our aisles,\u201d in comments shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/target-partnership\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Predatory&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Online, the policy shift has sparked backlash among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/technology\/comments\/1sevte6\/target_puts_customers_on_the_hook_for_ai_shopping\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reddit<\/a> users reacting to the news, many of whom questioned the fairness of placing responsibility on customers for AI-driven errors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">\u201cIf it were your own AI agent, this would be understandable. But NOT when it&#8217;s the site&#8217;s own,\u201d one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/reddit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reddit<\/a> contributor noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Another added: \u201cLikely returns will be for in-store credit, too, locking the revenue into their system even with returns. Predatory from jump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">A third commenter criticized what they see as a broader trend in <a href=\"https:\/\/rankings.newsweek.com\/category\/corporate-responsibility\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corporate accountability<\/a>, writing: \u201cZero responsibility for corporations in today&#8217;s America. All punishment is for the citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Retailers May Follow<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Retailers beyond Target are moving in a similar direction. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/walmart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walmart<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/amazon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a> have both introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/nw-ai\/artificial-intelligence-already-reshaping-retail-2103555\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI shopping assistants<\/a>, while also cautioning users to double-check purchases. These tools promise faster, more personalized shopping experiences, but they also introduce new layers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/risks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">risk<\/a> tied to automation and interpretation errors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Target has said that purchases made through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/business-forced-to-give-refund-ai-photo-11780714\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> assistant will still fall under its standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/targets-return-policy-changed-what-to-know-11075794\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return policies<\/a>, offering some recourse for customers.
