{"id":112489,"date":"2026-07-20T21:27:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T21:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/112489\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T21:27:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T21:27:15","slug":"us-judge-approves-anthropics-1-5-billion-settlement-of-copyright-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/112489\/","title":{"rendered":"US judge approves Anthropic&#8217;s $1.5 billion settlement of copyright lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">By Blake Brittain  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">July 20 (Reuters) &#8211; A federal judge in San Francisco on Monday signed off on artificial intelligence company Anthropic&#8217;s landmark $1.5 billion settlement \u200cof a class action lawsuit brought by a group of authors who accused \u200cit of misusing their books to train its AI chatbot Claude.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin \u200bsaid that she would grant final approval of the settlement, the largest known settlement of a U.S. copyright case.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The case is one of dozens brought by copyright owners including authors and news outlets against tech companies over the training \u200cof their large language models, \u2060and the first major U.S. case to settle.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Now-retired Judge William Alsup initially greenlit the deal last September.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The writers sued Anthropic in 2024, \u2060arguing that the company, which is backed by Amazon and Alphabet, used pirated versions of their books without permission to teach Claude to respond to human \u200bprompts.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Alsup ruled last \u200bJune that Anthropic made fair use \u200bof the authors&#8217; work to \u200ctrain Claude, but found that the company violated their rights by saving more than 7 million pirated books to a &#8220;central library&#8221; that would not necessarily be used for AI training. A trial was scheduled to begin last December to determine how much Anthropic owed for the alleged piracy, with potential \u200cdamages running into the hundreds of billions \u200bof dollars.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Authors and other copyright holders filed claims \u200bcovering over 92% of the \u200bmore than 480,000 works included in the settlement, an attorney \u200cfor the authors said during a \u200bcourt hearing.
