A sense of crisis is growing inside Google that it is falling behind Anthropic in the competition for AI coding tools, Bloomberg News reported on April 21, citing current and former employees familiar with internal matters.<\/p>\n
Google is pushing a plan to integrate coding-related initiatives into one to move faster. But Gemini model coding features are spread across more than six products with different brands, prompting criticism that it lacks consistency. With corporate customers showing interest in AI coding tools, Google has not presented a clear solution, sources said.<\/p>\n
Some Google engineers prefer Anthropic’s Claude Code over the company’s own tools, sources said.<\/p>\n
Google bars employees from using rival tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex for security reasons, but employees can apply for exceptions if they demonstrate a work need. Three former Google employees said some teams at Google DeepMind responsible for the Gemini model, internal applications and open-source models use Claude Code.<\/p>\n
The organisation structure is also under scrutiny. It is unclear who is leading as DeepMind, Google Cloud, Google Core, Google Labs and the Android division develop AI coding in different ways. Google appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu (\ucf54\ub808\uc774 \uce74\ubd80\ucf54\uae00\ub8e8) as chief AI architect last year, but confusion continues, Bloomberg News reported.<\/p>\n
There are also reported to be differences inside Google over coding AI. AI researchers want to move as quickly as possible, while traditional senior engineers stick to strict standards for code quality.
