{"id":112707,"date":"2026-07-21T01:23:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T01:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/112707\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T01:23:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T01:23:30","slug":"us-judge-approves-anthropics-1-5-billion-settlement-of-copyright-lawsuit-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/112707\/","title":{"rendered":"US judge approves Anthropic&#8217;s $1.5 billion settlement of copyright lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">By Blake Brittain  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">July 20 (Reuters) &#8211; A federal judge in San Francisco on Monday signed off on artificial intelligence company Anthropic&#8217;s landmark $1.5 billion settlement of a class action lawsuit brought by a group of authors who \u200caccused it of misusing their books to train its AI chatbot Claude.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">U.S. District Judge Araceli \u200cMartinez-Olguin granted final approval of the settlement, the largest known settlement of a U.S. copyright case, rejecting arguments that it was too \u200bsmall.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The case is one of dozens brought by copyright owners including authors and news outlets against tech companies over the training of their large language models, and the first major U.S. case to settle.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Now-retired Judge William Alsup initially approved the deal last September.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;We reached this settlement in 2025, after the court&#8217;s landmark ruling that training AI on books is fair \u200cuse under copyright law \u2014 which remains the \u2060law today,&#8221; Anthropic deputy general counsel Aparna Sridhar said in a statement.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;We are pleased that more than 91% of authors and publishers covered by the settlement have claimed \u2060their share of the payment, and we&#8217;re looking forward to bringing this matter to a close.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The authors&#8217; lead attorney, Justin Nelson, welcomed what he called a &#8220;historic settlement.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;It is the largest known copyright recovery in history. We look forward to \u200bmaking \u200bdistributions to the Class as promptly as possible,&#8221; Nelson said \u200bin a statement, referring to payments to \u200cauthors covered by the settlement.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The writers sued Anthropic in 2024, arguing that the company, which is backed by Amazon and Alphabet , used pirated versions of their books without permission to teach Claude to respond to human prompts.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Alsup ruled last June that Anthropic made fair use of the authors&#8217; work to train Claude, but found that the company violated their rights by saving more than 7 million pirated books to a &#8220;central library&#8221; that would not necessarily \u200cbe used for <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:AI;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;AI&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"no-affiliate-link link\">AI<\/a> training.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">A trial was scheduled to begin \u200blast December to determine how much Anthropic owed for the alleged \u200bpiracy, with potential damages running into the hundreds \u200bof billions of dollars.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The settlement spurred objections from some authors who argued it was \u200cnot large enough, overcompensated the plaintiffs&#8217; attorneys \u200bor wrongly excluded some copyright \u200bowners.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Judge Martinez-Olguin overruled those objections in her ruling on Monday.
