{"id":112835,"date":"2026-07-21T04:21:25","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T04:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/112835\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T04:21:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T04:21:25","slug":"anthropics-1-5b-settlement-of-authors-ai-copyright-lawsuit-gets-greenlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/112835\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropic&#8217;s $1.5B settlement of authors&#8217; AI copyright lawsuit gets greenlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge in San Francisco on Monday signed off on artificial intelligence company\u00a0Anthropic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/business\/amazon-backed-anthropic-agrees-to-pay-authors-1-5b-to-settle-ai-copyright-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landmark $1.5 billion settlement<\/a> of a class action lawsuit brought by a group of authors who accused it of misusing their books to train its AI chatbot Claude.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/20\/business\/judge-pauses-paramounts-110b-acquisition-of-warner-bros-discovery-after-california-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin<\/a>\u00a0granted\u00a0final approval of the settlement, the largest known settlement of a US copyright case,\u00a0rejecting arguments that it was too small.<\/p>\n<p>The case is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/04\/us-news\/100-authors-demand-over-75m-from-ai-company-that-stole-their-work-to-train-systems-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of dozens<\/a>\u00a0brought by copyright owners including authors and news outlets against tech companies over the training of their large language models, and the first major US case to settle.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.46704871;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40041525\" width=\"866\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ceo-anthropic-dario-amodei-addresses-134688365_4fd178.jpg\" alt=\"Dario Amodei speaking at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.\" class=\"wp-image-40041525\"  \/>The writers\u00a0sued\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0in 2024, arguing that the company, which is \u200cbacked by \u2060Amazon and Alphabet, used pirated versions of their books without permission to teach Claude to respond to human prompts. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Now-retired Judge William Alsup\u00a0initially approved\u00a0the deal last September.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are gratified by the Court\u2019s ruling granting final approval of this historic settlement. It is the largest known copyright recovery in history,\u201d the authors\u2019 lead attorney Justin Nelson said in a statement. \u201cWe look forward to making distributions to the Class as promptly as possible,\u201d\u00a0Nelson said, referring to payments to authors covered by the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>The writers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/20\/business\/authors-sue-ai-startup-anthropic-for-copyright-infringement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sued\u00a0Anthropic<\/a>\u00a0in 2024, arguing that the company, which is \u200cbacked by \u2060Amazon and Alphabet, used pirated versions of their books without permission to teach Claude to respond to human prompts.<\/p>\n<p>Alsup\u00a0ruled last June\u00a0\u200bthat\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0made fair \u2060use of the authors\u2019 work to train Claude, but found that the company violated their rights by saving more than 7 million pirated books to a \u201ccentral library\u201d \u200bthat would not necessarily be used for AI training. Christopher Sadowski for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Authors and other copyright holders\u00a0filed claims\u00a0covering over 92% of the more than 480,000 works included in the settlement, an attorney for the authors said during a court hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement spurred objections from some authors who argued it \u200bwas\u00a0not large enough, overcompensated the plaintiffs\u2019 attorneys or wrongly excluded some copyright owners.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Martinez-Olguin overruled those objections in her ruling on Monday.
