July 21 (Reuters) – Chinese authorities are considering tightening export controls on AI<\/a> and semiconductor technologies, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

The step \u200creflects Beijing’s push to keep domestic AI at home and show \u200cthat China, like the U.S., now sees advanced AI as a critical national asset requiring controls. <\/p>\n

Earlier \u200bthis month, Reuters had exclusively reported that Chinese authorities had earlier held meetings with top tech firms about potentially restricting overseas access to China’s most advanced AI models, including those yet to be released. <\/p>\n

Regulators led by China’s Ministry of Commerce \u200chave been consulting top \u2060homegrown AI and chipmaking companies on how to stop China’s advanced technologies and leading start-ups from being acquired by the \u2060west, the report said, citing two people involved in the discussions. <\/p>\n

The Commerce Ministry, which oversees export regulations, has also spoken with AI companies including Alibaba, ByteDance and \u200bZhipu on \u200blimiting the transfer of key data for \u200bthe training of their models \u200coverseas, as well as allowing their model weights to be downloaded by foreign users, the newspaper said. <\/p>\n

It has also sought views on possible restrictions that would prevent overseas chipmakers including Qualcomm and TSMC from producing advanced semiconductors based on designs developed by Chinese companies such as Huawei, Alibaba and ByteDance, FT \u200creported. <\/p>\n

The new measures could be included into the \u200bnext revision of China’s catalogue of technologies \u200bprohibited or restricted from export, \u200bthe report said, adding that these proposals are under consideration \u200cand regulators are weighing industry feedback before \u200bmaking a final \u200bcall. <\/p>\n

Potential restrictions could also be imposed on the overseas acquisition of strategic technology in areas such as agentic AI, FT said. <\/p>\n

Reuters could not \u200bimmediately verify the report. The \u200cCommerce Ministry, ByteDance, Alibaba, Zhipu, Huawei, Qualcomm and TSMC did not \u200bimmediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. <\/p>\n
