Microsoft has
\nagreed to spend billions of dollars on Mistral’s computing
\ninfrastructure in \u200bEurope under a deal that will also expand
\ndistribution of the French \u2060AI startup’s technology through the
\nU.S. cloud and software giant, the companies said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
As part of the agreement, Microsoft Azure customers will be
\nable to develop software using Mistral’s data \u200ccenters in France,
\ngiving Microsoft more capacity in Europe and regulated
\nindustries an alternative to U.S.-controlled infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Mistral, meanwhile, has added its AI models called Medium
\n3.5 \u200cand OCR 4 to Microsoft’s app builder known as Foundry.
\nMicrosoft Copilot Studio \u200chas \u2060brought on Medium 3.5 as well.<\/p>\n
Finally, businesses with independent data centers \u2060that
\naccess Microsoft services via Azure Local will have the option
\nto run Mistral’s “open” models, which give customers license to
\ndevelop AI as their own.<\/p>\n
The deal underscores growing interest in Europe and
\nelsewhere to reduce dependence \u200bon U.S. technology so other
\ncountries may \u200chave greater say in their future society and
\neconomy. It may also help Microsoft meet rising demand for open
\nmodels.<\/p>\n
Though the push for “sovereign” AI is now years old, a U.S.
\ndecision last month to pause foreign access to two advanced
\nmodels from \u200cSan Francisco-based Anthropic has made technology
\nindependence a more urgent issue in Europe.<\/p>\n
In \u200ba joint interview with Reuters, Microsoft President Brad
\nSmith and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch said the partnership aimed
\nto deliver such sovereignty while \u2060allowing access to U.S.
\nsoftware and security features.<\/p>\n
“By putting Mistral’s models on Azure Local and on Mistral’s
\ncomputational capacity, we can combine American and European
\ntechnology and do it in a \u200cway that provides continuous and
\nassured access,” Smith said.<\/p>\n
STAYING IN AI RACE<\/p>\n
Decoupling Europe from U.S. technology would be a tall
\norder. Nvidia chips powering the global AI boom, also
\nkey to Mistral’s data-center buildout, are American-designed.
\nNvidia, like Microsoft, is a Mistral investor.<\/p>\n
Smith said the deal announced on Tuesday did not include any
\nnew financial stake in the startup, and Mensch declined to
\ncomment on a Bloomberg News report that Mistral was \u200cin talks to
\nraise around \u20ac3 billion ($3.4 billion) at a \u20ac20 billion
\nvaluation.<\/p>\n
The Paris-based lab has come to represent one \u200bof Europe’s
\ntop hopes in AI. So far it has targeted manufacturing, financial
\nservices and defense sales and has won business from France’s
\narmed forces. \u2060Its valuation remains dwarfed by U.S. peers such
\nas Anthropic.<\/p>\n
Still, Mensch said the deal showed \u2060how Microsoft and Mistral
\nwere “working together on closing the gap on the infrastructure
\nside in Europe.”<\/p>\n
Mistral is targeting 1 gigawatt of compute capacity by 2030,
\nand \u200cthe Microsoft agreement – specifics of which Mensch declined
\nto provide – validates its strategy.<\/p>\n
The companies are working on a joint go-to-market plan, they
\nadded.<\/p>\n
“This is going to help \u200bboth of our companies grow our
\nbusinesses, unquestionably,” Smith said.<\/p>\n
